    Abstract: The invention relates to an aqueous sizing composition comprising (a) an emulsion comprising an alkenylsuccinic anhydride component containing alkenylsuccinic anhydride particles suspended in a first starch component containing emulsifying starch selected from the group consisting of non-ionic starches, ionic starches, and mixtures thereof, and (b) a second starch component selected from the group consisting of non-ionic starches, ionic starches and mixtures thereof, such that the alkenylsuccinic anhydride and the starch in the emulsion and the second starch component are present at a starch: alkenylsuccinic anhydride weight ratio that is sufficiently high to enable the sizing composition to impart useful sizing properties to a fibrous substrate when the sizing composition contacts the fibrous substrate. The invention also relates to fibrous substrates treated with the sizing composition, processes for making the composition and processes for using such a composition, and other compositions.

    Abstract: A composition comprising a polymer that is a reaction product of: a copolymer backbone comprising; (i) at least one acrylamide component, (ii) at least one co-monomer, (iii) at least one initiator and (iv) at least one chain transfer agent; and at least one cellulose reactive agent; wherein the copolymer backbone and cellulose reactive agent are combined with water to form a solution wherein the concentration of the copolymer backbone is about 0.1 to about 19% by weight based on the total weight of the solution. A process to make high solids copolymer backbone with low molecular weight and narrow molecular weight distribution has also been developed by a continuous polymerization process under refluxing conditions. In this process, a mixture of the acrylamide, co-monomer and chain transfer agent and the initiator are simultaneously and continuously added to a heel of water.

In a preferred embodiment, the paper is sized with a sizing emulsion comprised of alkenyl succinic anhydride and a cationic water-soluble polymer having ammonium groups that are attached to the polymer by at least two chemical bonds.
