  • Patent number: 5934827
Abstract: A method of regenerating tidal mud flats which have a degraded or eroding profile includes the steps of ascertaining the ambient tidal range and wave climate of a mud flat to be regenerated and deriving from these data a new, regenerated profile for the mud flat, and depositing densified or dewatered mud or clay on the mud flat to build the new profile. The wave climate, and hence the sedimentary regime, of the mud flat is modified by breakwater or barrier means to render the mud flat receptive to deposition and retentive of the deposited mud or clay to preserve the regenerated profile. The breakwater or barrier means may be an offshore, floating breakwater adapted to suppress high and short-period waves but to permit the passage of low and long-period waves.

  • Patent number: 5853283
Abstract: A lifting apparatus is provided that is especially suited for mounting on a towing vehicle and for lifting a vehicle. The invention comprises an L-shaped member with a boom leg. The L-shaped member pivots on a base frame pivot and an upper pivot. Linkage arms hingeably connect the upper pivot to a camming crank. The camming crank has a forward direction of rotation and a rearward direction of rotation, and an actuator pivot. In the forward direction of rotation, a force means rotates the camming crank about the upper frame pivot, causing the linkage pivot of the camming crank to pull the linkage arms, so that the linkage arms tilt the L-shaped bar and so raise the boom leg. In the rearward direction of rotation, the force means rotates the camming crank in the opposite direction about the linkage pivot, pushing the linkage arms so that the linkage arms tilt the L shaped bar, lowering the boom leg. The force means can be an extending and retracting actuator such as a hydraulic cylinder and piston.

  • Patent number: 4791812
Abstract: A yarn inspection system which comprises a source of yarn, a defect detector and a take-up stand is provided with the following features. A yarn path extender is located between the detector and the take-up stand and comprises a plurality of rolls each having a yarn contacting surface finish of about 40 to 100 RMS; the longitudinal axes of the rolls are approximately parallel, and the rolls are positioned so that the yarn path about the rolls is sinuous. The take-up stand comprises at least two rolls, at least one of which is driven by a motor, with each of the rolls being positioned for contact with at least one other roll while the yarn passes therebetween when the system is operational. A switch, normally closed when the rolls are positioned for contact with a least one other roll, opens when the rolls are displaced to thereby stop the driving motor.

  • Patent number: 4729333
Abstract: A remotely-controllable, surface-referenced paravane for use in towing an object in a body of water at a controlled lateral offset from the pathway of the towing vessel is disclosed. The principal components of the paravane are a buoyant hull, a cambered hydrofoil shaped keel attached to the bottom of the hull and extending generally downwardly into the body of water, a remotely-controllable steering means, and a tow cable which connects the paravane to the towing vessel. Passage of the cambered hydrofoil shaped keel through the water generates a lateral force, similar to the lift generated by an airfoil, which causes the paravane to move laterally away from the pathway of the towing vessel in the direction of the lateral force. The remotely-controllable steering means is used to compensate for changes in the speed of the towing vessel or variations in wind, waves, or currents so as to maintain the lateral offset of the paravane within certain limits.

  • Patent number: 4697667
Abstract: The present invention is an improvement to conventional baseplates for imparting seismic energy to an earth formation. A baseplate typically has a plurality of downwardly disposed triangular prism-shaped cleats for engagement with the earth surface above an earth formation under seismological investigation. At least one leaf spring is supported about midway along its length from the lower surface of the baseplate and between the cleats. An elongate horizontal ejector member is slidably interconnected to the respective ends of the spring. In operation, as the baseplate is lowered into engagement with the earth surface the ejector member is moved upward and the leaf spring is compressed. When the baseplate is lifted upward the restoring force of the leaf spring results in a generally downward force against the ejector member.

  • Patent number: 4556120
Abstract: The invention is a device known generically as an "air gun" suitable for producing a shock wave in a subsea environment during seismic prospecting. It is made up of a central chamber holding pressurized gas. The gas is released explosively into the water by moving a double acting shuttle. The shuttle seals the central gas chamber at each end of its stroke. A novel pneumatic actuator is also shown.

  • Patent number: 4381044
Abstract: A compressed-gas seismic energy source suitable for underwater prospecting. The device has two gas storage cylinders placed at the opposite ends of a shuttle. The shuttle seals both storage cylinders when seated at the end of its stroke and releases gas for the desired sonic pulse from both cylinders during its stroke. Design of the device provides for simplicity of operation, ready modification of the sonic signature, and reliability of moving parts.

  • Patent number: 4353431
Abstract: Disclosed herein are improvements in a recoil reducing system of a gas gun which create pulses in a liquid medium by introducing therein gas under high pressure. The release of high pressure gas from the barrel of such a gas gun causes recoil of the barrel. To reduce recoil, a reaction plate is attached to the barrel by metal rods so that the high pressure gas will impinge upon the reaction plate before escaping into the medium, and the force exerted on the reaction plate by the impinging gas will at least partially balance the force of recoil. In a preferred embodiment of this invention, a layer of shock absorbent material is interposed between the reaction plate and the impinging gas to absorb some of the energy of the gas. Flexing of the metal rods is thereby reduced and the life of the rods is extended. Alternatively, the flexing of the rods is reduced by connecting each rod to the reaction plate through a chain link type of connection comprising two rings, each ring passing through the other ring.
