A cover cross member (8) is attached to the cover (4) and projects out beyond two opposed side walls (2a, 2b) for connection to a shell of the motor vehicle so that the protective housing (1) is suspended in a rotationally fixed fashion in the motor vehicle.

The profile part (30) is connected firmly to the bracket (20) that is fixed to the vehicle thereby providing improved side impact protection and enhanced safety for vehicle occupants.

The rear end portion of the cartridge is engaged between the first retention member and the front wall in the first position. The rear end portion of the cartridge is engaged between the second retention member and the back wall in the second position. The top surface of the cartridge is spaced apart from the bottom wall of the cover in the first and second positions.
