  • Patent number: 7695229
Abstract: A method for adhesive binding and assembly of text bodies having plural sheets to a cover to form a bound document. Exemplary embodiments include applying an adhesive to a contacting surface of a plurality of sheets of the text body on an individual sheet-wide basis and adhering the plurality of sheets to the cover on an individual sheet-wide base by making line contact between the contacting surface and the cover and by curing the adhesive. Alternatively, the plurality of sheets can be positioned in a stand-off position from the cover and the adhesive can be applied into the gap. A system for binding a text body to a cover to form a bound document is also disclosed.

  • Patent number: 7544029
Abstract: The present invention is generally directed to an apparatus and method for attaching a cover to an assembly of plural sheets. Exemplary embodiments include first and second clamping components displaceable relative to one another, wherein the first and second clamping components define a first dimension of a sheet receiving volume, and wherein a second dimension of the sheet receiving volume is defined by a sheet stop and a first plane that is orthogonal to the first and second clamping components; and a roller drive for displacing a first roller along the first plane and exerting a force perpendicular to the first plane in a direction toward the sheet receiving volume.

  • Patent number: 7156601
Abstract: A binding system for binding a plurality of text bodies in a continuous manner includes an adhesive strip applier, a heating device, and a cooling device. A transporting system transports a plurality of text bodies to the adhesive strip applier which applies a preformed adhesive strip to the moving text body. The heating device heats the adhesive strip and melts the adhesive strip into contact with the text body and the cooling device cools the adhesive to form a bound text body.

  • Patent number: 6986631
Abstract: Systems and methods for binding a text body are described. A multi-function sheet binder is configured to heat a preformed solid hot melt adhesive to a melting temperature, form the melted adhesive by pressing the melted adhesive into a spine of a text body and folding down edges of the melted adhesive into contact with the text body, and actively cool the formed adhesive. A spot heater is configured to heat one or more localized areas of a solid hot melt adhesive to a temperature sufficient to tack the hot melt adhesive to a text body spine. An adhesive former is configured to press a localized region of a preformed heated solid hot melt adhesive into a spine of a text body and to fold down edge regions of the preformed solid hot melt adhesive into contact with the text body.

  • Patent number: 6641345
Abstract: Systems and methods are described for increasing the binding strength of a bound text body by increasing the spinal surface area exposed for adhesive penetration greater than an area corresponding to the product of the sheet height dimension, the sheet thickness dimension and the number of sheets. In one aspect, sheet-wise conditioning of the binding area is performed prior to the application of adhesive to increase the bond area between sheets of the text body. In another aspect, the spinal surface area exposed for adhesive penetration is increased as adhesive is applied.

  • Publication number: 20020168248
Abstract: Systems and methods of dispensing adhesive in a bookbinding system are described. Sheets may be bound into bound text bodies having respective spines exposed for adhesive application and characterized by multiple length dimensions and multiple thickness dimensions. In one aspect, a sheet binding system comprises an adhesive dispenser that is configured to dispense across the thickness dimension of a text body spine solid sheet adhesive having one of multiple effective widths that is sized to correspond substantially to the length dimension of the text body spine. In accordance with this approach, books of different lengths (or heights) may be readily bound with solid sheet adhesive that may be contained within a single, replaceable cartridge housing.

  • Patent number: 6105988
Abstract: A suspension system having first and second elements telescopingly engaged and being biased apart by a positive spring, such biasing being counteracted by a negative spring. In one embodiment, the positive spring and negative spring are disposed in the first element, which is in the form of a tube, and separated by a damping system, and a damping piston is fixed with respect to the first element. In another embodiment in which the suspension system comprises two legs of a bicycle suspension fork, a positive spring is disposed in both legs, and a negative spring and damping system are disposed in separate legs. In another embodiment in which the suspension system comprises a rear shock absorber for a bicycle, the negative and positive springs are disposed in a first tubular element, and a damping system is disposed in a second tubular element.
