  • Publication number: 20120068085
Abstract: A method of and apparatus for photo-activating a collected sample of fat tissue including stem cells therein, contained in a tissue collection and processing device. The collected fat tissue sample including stem cells therein, is exposed to low levels of photo-active light energy while contained within the tissue collection and processing device. The tissue sample is photometrically-measured to determine the photo-activation index of the fat tissue sample. The Photo-active light energy emission is controlled to ensure optimized photo-activation, thereby providing the fat tissue sample with an improved capacity to bind free oxygen species in the fat tissue sample.

  • Publication number: 20110118542
Abstract: A method of and apparatus for safely removing visceral fatty tissue from the patient's mesentery and omentum is disclosed. In the preferred embodiment, the method involves using a novel minimally invasive or laparoscopic surgical procedure involving the inflation of the abdominal region with gas that creates a space between the wall of the abdomen and the organs inside. Using short incisions in the skin, narrow tubes are inserted through the abdominal wall so that a laparoscopically-guided electro-cauterizing and irrigating visceral fat aspiration instrument can be passed through the incision to perform the maneuvers necessary for the operation. Removal of visceral fat from the mesentery is observed directly on a video monitor, which receives its picture from a video camera attached to the laparoscope. Using this technique, it is now possible to safely remove visceral fat from the patient's mesentery to treat abdominal obesity, type II diabetes mellitus and/or metabolic syndrome in human patients.

  • Patent number: 7740605
Abstract: An apparatus is disclosed for mechanically-assisted liposuction treatment. The apparatus includes a hand-holdable housing, an electro-cauterizing cannula assembly, and a reciprocation mechanism. The hand-holdable housing has a cavity adaptable for receipt of a portion of the electro-cauterizing cannula assembly. The electro-cauterizing cannula assembly has a distal end and a proximal end and at least one aspiration aperture about the distal end. The reciprocation mechanism is disposed within the housing and is operably associated with either the cannula so that the cannulas can be selectively caused to reciprocate relative to the housing. As the cannula is caused to reciprocate relative to the housing, the aspiration aperture formed through the distal end of the cannula assembly is caused to undergo periodic displacement. The cannula assembly is releasably detachable from the hand-holdable housing to facilitate cleaning and sterilization of the cannula assembly and the housing.

  • Patent number: 7112200
Abstract: An electro-cauterizing cannula assembly for use in a power-assisted liposuction instrument having a hand-holdable housing and a mechanism for reciprocating the cannula assembly. The electro-cauterizing cannula assembly includes an inner and an outer cannula, each having a distal and proximal end and at least one aspiration aperture about the distal end. The inner cannula is disposed within the outer cannula and the inner and outer aspiration apertures are in at least partial registration to form an effective aspiration aperture. During aspiration of tissue, high-voltage RF power signals are supplied to the inner and outer cannulas to effect hemostasis about the reciprocating aspiration aperture. Such hemostasis is achieved by causing protein molecules within aspirated tissue to coagulate in response to the high-voltage RF signals being supplied across the reciprocating cannulas. The cannula assembly is releasably detachable from the hand-holdable housing to facilitate cleaning and sterilization of the same.
