  • Patent number: 6010087
Abstract: A fly fishing reel is disclosed which allows for a simplified construction allowing for reversibility of the drag effect on a spool to facilitate left- or right-hand operation without disassembling small parts which can be lost in the boat. The spool structure is strengthened by virtue of a tapered design. A snap-on cap doubles as a support for a spring that holds the spool to a shaft.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: August 22, 1996
Date of Patent: January 4, 2000
    Assignee: Brunswick Corporation
Inventors: Scott T. Merrill, Robert L. Forslund, Ronald M. Cross
  • Patent number: 5782420
Abstract: A centrifugally actuated braking system on an end flange of the line spool of a bait cast reel. A series of raised lands or stops on the end flange cooperates with projections on the brake pads mounted on radiating brake arms to limit radial movement of the centrifugally actuated brake pads. Orthogonal brake arms are joined by an arcuate section which rides in an annular groove in the spool shaft. Additional weights for increasing braking power may be slidingly mounted on the brake arms behind the brake pads. A retainer ring sliding onto the spool shaft holds the brake arms in place. An inner lip on the retainer ring rides in a second annular groove in the spool shaft to hold the retainer ring in its locking position on the shaft.

  • Patent number: 5568787
Abstract: An apparatus for indicating line type on a fishing reel having a spool for storing a supply of fishing line and structure for wrapping the fishing line onto the spool to effect retrieval of paid out fishing line. The apparatus includes a rotatable dial or other settable structure on the fishing reel for giving a user a visual indication of which of a plurality of different types of fishing line is on the spool.
