    Abstract: The mammary prostheses of the invention have a self-sealing area in the upper pole region of the anterior face. The self-sealing area is greater than that of a traditional filling port, and reduces the severity of the consequences of an inadvertent puncture by a hypodermic needle during the filling process. Also, this self-sealing area is thicker than the material in the other areas of the prosthesis, causing fluid introduced to the prosthesis to stay in the lower pole region of the prosthesis, making the shape of the prosthesis appear more like that of a natural breast.

    Abstract: The prosthesis of the invention are configured such that the average thickness of the shell in the region where the posterior and anterior faces meet is greater, e.g., at least twice, the average thickness of the shell in the region of the anterior face. This reinforcement can reduce or eliminate undesirable scalloping effects along the upper perimeter of the prosthesis that can otherwise occur when gravity pulls downward on a filled prosthesis. Moreover, because the reinforcement is preferably confined to a radius/posterior region extending at least part of the way around the perimeter of the prosthesis, it is possible for the shell of the prosthesis in nearly the entire anterior face of the prosthesis to be formed of relatively thin material. This preserves a natural appearance of the prosthesis when it is implanted.

    Abstract: A sleeve for introducing a surgical instrument (e.g., a lipoplasty probe) into the body via a wound pierced in the skin, and an insertion device for making the wound and inserting the sleeve therethrough are provided. The sleeve reduces the transmission of friction and heat (e.g., caused by the highly repetitive in-and-out and rotational movements and ultrasonic vibration of the lipoplasty probe) to the skin of the patient. In addition, the size of the hole associated with insertion of the sleeve is significantly smaller and more uniform in shape than that associated with a traditional scalpel incision. By piercing the skin, rather than making an incision with a scalpel, and by reducing friction and heat transmission to the skin, the irritation, inflammation, flowering (i.e., curling up of the skin at the edges of an incision), and scarring associated with lipoplasty are minimized, and the cosmetic result of the procedure is improved.

    Abstract: An introducer sheath assembly having an improved valve assembly including at least three elastic disc shaped membranes. A first membrane has a circular hole through the center to sealingly receive a catheter while a second membrane has a center hole smaller than the hole in the first membrane to sealingly receive a guidewire. The second membrane also has at least one slit through the hole to accommodate passage of the larger catheter through the second membrane. A third membrane contains at least one slit through its center to seal the valve assembly in the absence of a guidewire or catheter.

    Abstract: An improved multi-lumen catheter having lumens which do not extend in a straight line down the length of the catheter is disclosed. The twisting of the catheter provides that side holes which extend into the lumens of the catheter are not aligned in a straight line. Accordingly, when the catheter is inserted into a patient's vessel, the side holes cannot be aligned in a manner which causes all of the side holes of a particular lumen to be occluded by the wall of the patient's vessel.A catheter of the type disclosed can be manufactured by an extrusion process in which the catheter is twisted during the extrusion, or by heating a non-twisted catheter and then twisting it in order to impart an appropriate twist therein.
