    Abstract: A flashlight has a lamp assembly with a number of operating states including an off state and a number of different brightness level output states The flashlight has an elongated housing with opposed forward and rear ends. The housing has a body portion extending to the rear end, and a head portion rotatably attached to the body portion and extending to the forward end. The lamp operating state is based on the rotational position of the head portion with respect to the body. The body portion and head portion may be cylindrical elements of a common diameter. The head portion may include an electronic component having a rotatable input that is engaged by an element on the body portion. The flashlight may include a removable end portion opposite the head portion, with a support facility operable to support the housing, such that a user does not need to contact the housing.
