    Abstract: A blade that includes a body formed from a carbon steel material is provided. The body has a cutting edge portion and a side surface. The side surface has a colored oxide layer formed thereon. Selected portions of the oxide layer have been removed to reveal the underlying carbon steel material so as to provide indicia on the surface of the blade by virtue of a color contrast between the colored oxide layer and the revealed carbon steel material. A method of manufacturing such a blade is also provided.
