  • Patent number: 6920565
Abstract: A system and method are provided wherein digital data representing content and associated license rights may copied to a storage medium, such as a removable storage medium, whereby the serial number of the copied-to storage medium is integrated into the licensing scheme utilized to secure the digital content. As a result, the digital content is pre-authenticated and bound to the copied-to storage medium, obviating the need to access a network or other location for access to the protected content.

  • Patent number: 6718446
Abstract: Data on a master is read into a master image file, and the master image file is manipulated to include a benchmark comprising tracking and verification information tied to at least a portion of the master image file. Thus, a copied-to storage media as copied from the master image file also includes such benchmark, a data alteration of the master image file causes a mis-match with regard to the benchmark in such master image file, and a data alteration of the copied-to storage media also causes a mis-match with regard to the benchmark in such storage media as copied from such master image file. The benchmark may include a part identifier and a security identifier.

  • Patent number: 6717758
Abstract: A disk is manufactured having a reduced capacity based on a quantity of addressable and non-addressable portions. The method of formatting the disk comprises identifying a first quantity of the storage portions; and labeling the first quantity of storage portions as non-addressable storage portions such that the non-addressable storage portions cannot be accessed by a user or a disk drive. The first quantity of storage portions may include addressable portions designated as non-addressable portions.

  • Publication number: 20030182605
Abstract: A process for identifying and designating a radially-oriented defect pattern on a data-storage medium comprises determining an angular position of one or more pre-identified defective data sectors on the data-storage medium by counting a number of servo sectors on the data-storage medium that pass a predetermined reference point. The process also comprises defining a radially-oriented pattern of the pre-identified defective data sectors based on a predetermined relationship between: a number of the pre-identified defective data sectors having substantially identical angular positions; and radial spacing between the pre-identified defective data sectors having substantially identical angular positions. The process further comprises writing defect-identification information to data sectors having locations that substantially coincide with the radially-oriented pattern of the pre-identified defective data sectors.

  • Patent number: 6557125
Abstract: A defect map for a data-storage medium is generated without the use of a hard index on the medium. The servo sectors normally written to the medium during formatting operations are utilized to identify the angular positions of defective data sectors. The track-location data typically stored in each data sector is used to identify the radial positions of defective sectors. This positional information is processed by a set of computer-executable instructions that generate a graphical representation of the data-storage medium. Symbols are placed on the graphical representation in positions corresponding to the locations on the medium at which defective data sectors are identified.

  • Patent number: 5917669
Abstract: Inserting operational data onto a magnetic disk allows information to be transferred from a servowriter station to a verifier station. This operational data allows disk specific operational data to follow the disk without separate means for attaching data to each disk. The servowriters, which cannot write information to disks at the data sector frequency, inserts the operational data into selected greycodes in the servo sectors. When the disks are verified, the operational data may be moved from the servo sectors to the data sector in the Z-tracks for more permanent storage.

  • Patent number: 4979878
Abstract: An asymmetrical or relieved piston is provided in a fluid motor or a pump. The piston is rigidly connected to one end of the connecting rod, the opposite end of which is pivotally connected to a rotating crankshaft. The piston has a relieved upper and lower section each of which has a partial spherical surface. When the piston is tilted in one direction through half of a rotation of the crankshaft, a seal is formed between the partial spherical surface and the wall of a cylinder. During the other half of the rotation, the relieved piston is tilted in the opposite direction, the seal is broken, and fluid bypasses the piston from the upper half of the cylinder volume to the lower half or vice versa. A floating poppet valve is utilized in the engine, and a floating check valve is utilized in the pump of the described single piston embodiments.
