Publication number: 20090280565Abstract: The present invention relates to a novel perfusion bioreactor allowing continuous medium feed and extraction of metabolites or other desired products from cells. The invention is useful for plant cell cultures but may also be used for mammalian cell cultures, insect cell cultures and bacterial cell cultures. The design of the reactor includes sedimentation columns mounted inside the bioreactor to separate single cells and cell aggregates from the culture medium at a very low shear stress. The operating conditions allow a stable cell/medium separation by maintaining the medium upward velocity equal to or slightly lower than the cell sedimentation velocity.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 22, 2006Publication date: November 12, 2009Applicant: CORPORATION De L'ECOLE POLYTECHIQUE MONTR'EALInventors: Mario Jolicoeur, Robert Legros, Caroline De Dobbeleer, Steve Hisiger

Patent number: 6119607Abstract: The process is conducted in an incinerator installation comprising i) a generally vertical, cylindrical riser pipe, ii) a vertically extending annular chamber surrounding the riser pipe and containing a fluidized bed of granular inert material, and iii) a burner for producing an upwardly extending flame in the lower portion of the riser pipe. Granular solid waste is supplied at a constant flow rate to the bed, directly or through the burner. Granular solid waste and bed material is transferred from the lower portion of the annular chamber to the lower portion of the riser pipe directly in the flame. The flame burns the granular solid waste, heats the inside of the riser pipe to a temperature greater than or equal to 900.degree. Patent number: 5913588Abstract: A spout-fluid bed drying system and process is comprised of a spout-fluid bed dryer having a conical shaped lower section provided with a packing of heat exchange particles. A cyclone separator is connected to the top of the dryer with separated particles collected by a receiver connected to the leg of the cyclone. A vapor fan compresses the air-vapor mixture before it goes to the heat recuperator and mixing chamber. A tube-shell type heat exchanger, wherein effluent gases from the vapor fan are preheated with heat exchange with the outcoming high temperature gases. A combustion and incineration chamber wherein a natural gas burner is installed at the top and the high temperature flame is used to incinerate the effluent gases introduced from the annulus channel of the chamber to have the odors and VOCs destroyed.Type: GrantFiled: September 12, 1997Date of Patent: June 22, 1999Assignee: Societe en Commandite Gaz MetropolitainInventors: Robert Legros, Jamal Chaouki, Xiao Tao Bi, Arturo Macchi, Kebir Ratnani

Patent number: 4815482Abstract: Mobilization apparatus for the treatment, drying for example, of particulate material comprises a mobilization zone bounded by upwardly divergent walls. Particulate material in the zone is mobilized by being subjected to a flow of gaseous mobilizing medium supplied at a multiplicity of sites of the divergent walls. The material is simultaneously subjected to a flow of gaseous accelerating medium supplied in an upward direction from a lower region of the mobilization zone. The obtains in the mobilization zone of circulatory pattern comprising downward flow at the divergent walls and upward flow from a lower region of the zone.In order to discharge the particulate material from the apparatus, a mask extending outwardly from the lower end of an upwardly extending discharge duct is brought to the upper end of the mobilization zone. The result is that the circulatory pattern is destroyed and the material is pneumatically transported up the discharge duct.Type: GrantFiled: December 4, 1986Date of Patent: March 28, 1989Assignee: British-American Tobacco Company LimitedInventors: Roland Clift, Roger W. Hedge, Robert Legros, Clive A. Millington
