Patent number: 8647076Abstract: A multistage compressor installation in which compression stages utilizing centrifugal compressors are independently driven by drivers that can be electric motors configured to be controlled by a speed controller. Intercoolers are located between stages to remove the heat of compression and the stages are connected such that outlets are located opposite to inlets of the compressors and conduits connecting the intercoolers to the stages are in an in-line relationship to inhibit the formation of pressure drops between stages. The conduits connecting the stages incorporate tapered transition sections configured such that flow velocity gradually decreases towards the intercooler and gradually increases from the intercooler to the next succeeding compression stage to further inhibit pressure drops.Type: GrantFiled: January 16, 2013Date of Patent: February 11, 2014Assignee: Praxair Technology, Inc.Inventors: Robert Leroy Baker, Jeffrey Charles Goodband, Richard John Jibb, John Henri Royal

Patent number: 8004102Abstract: The present invention provides a method and apparatus for generating refrigeration in a process operating at sub-ambient temperatures in which the refrigeration is generated by a turboexpander. The turboexpander is coupled to a generator controlled so that its speed is maintained at a setpoint through electromagnetic braking and its power output is maintained at line matching voltage and frequency. The speed control of the generator therefore, also controls the speed of the turboexpander. The setpoint is calculated to be equal to a product of an operational efficiency parameter, U/Co, and a square root of twice the enthalpy drop in the flow passing through the turboexpander divided by a product of pi and a diameter of an impeller employed within the turboexpander.Type: GrantFiled: April 3, 2009Date of Patent: August 23, 2011Assignee: Praxair Technology, Inc.Inventors: Jeremiah James Rauch, Robert Leroy Baker, Gerald T. O'Connor, Michael John Stanko, Murali Chinta

Publication number: 20090241595Abstract: A distillation method and apparatus having application to the distillation of air in which liquid production make is varied by varying the pressure ratio across a turboexpander used in generating refrigeration. The pressure ratio is varied by varying the pressure of a compressed stream fed to the turboexpander. This is done by solely compressing such compressed stream by a first booster compressor during a low rate of production of liquid products. During a high rate of production of liquid products, the compressed stream is also compressed within a second booster compressor. The second booster compressor is driven by a variable speed drive to allow a variety of liquid production rates between the low level of liquid production and the high level of liquid production.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 27, 2008Publication date: October 1, 2009Applicant: PRAXAIR TECHNOLOGY, INC.Inventors: Murali Chinta, Robert Leroy Baker, Jeremiah Rauch

Patent number: 7452187Abstract: A compressor having a defined large diameter impeller having an integral shroud and having a three dimensional gas flow path defined by the impeller hub surface, blades and the shroud and having a large axially oriented inlet or inducer section with aggressive inducer blades, a defined outlet section geometry, and continuous blade geometries between the inlet and outlet sections.Type: GrantFiled: August 9, 2005Date of Patent: November 18, 2008Assignee: Praxair Technology, Inc.Inventors: Robert Leroy Baker, Ahmed Abdelwahab, Gordon J. Gerber

Patent number: 7448852Abstract: A low solidity vaned airfoil diffuser for a centrifugal compressor wherein each blade has a lean angle greater than zero and wherein the hub stagger angle may be the same as or may be different from the shroud stagger angle for each blade.Type: GrantFiled: August 9, 2005Date of Patent: November 11, 2008Assignee: Praxair Technology, Inc.Inventors: Ahmed Abdelwahab, Robert Leroy Baker, Gordon J. Patent number: 6663341Abstract: A process fluid recycle system for compressor assemblies to recycle process fluid vapor flowing from one or more compressors to gear case(s) through shaft seal(s). The flowing process fluid is recycled back to the low pressure inlet of the compressor assembly by way of a recycle conduit. Coalescing filters are provided to separate oil mist from the process fluid vapor. Oil vapor and water vapor can also be removed, where necessary, by suitable oil and water vapor traps. During startup and shutdown or other times when low pressure transients occur that could cause a back flow of gear oil from the gear case into the compressor(s) by way of the shaft seal(s), an anti-back flow compressor is operated to ensure that the pressure within the gear case will be less than within the compressor.Type: GrantFiled: February 19, 2002Date of Patent: December 16, 2003Assignee: Praxair Technology, Inc.Inventors: Alfred Peter Evans, Neno Todorov Nenov, Gregory William Henzler, Jeffert John Nowobilski, Robert Leroy Baker

Patent number: 6582185Abstract: A sealing system to prevent loss of a process fluid from a device having a device opening and a rotating member operable for rotational movement within the device opening. A rotary shaft seal such as a labyrinth seal, seals the rotating member in the device opening to inhibit leakage of process fluid. A chamber is connected to the device to recover leakage of the process fluid that leaks from the rotary shaft seal. A barrier seal is connected to the chamber to inject a barrier fluid under pressure to prevent the escape of process fluid from the chamber. The chamber discharges a mixture of barrier and process fluid to a filter, such as a coalescing filter, to separate the barrier fluid from the process fluid. Barrier fluid vapor and water vapor traps can also be used for purification purposes. The barrier fluid is recovered and recycled back to the barrier seal. The process fluid is returned to the device.Type: GrantFiled: September 14, 2001Date of Patent: June 24, 2003Assignee: Praxair Technology, Inc.Inventors: Adam Kenneth Lippert, Scott Alan Spriggs, Gregory William Henzler, Jeffert John Nowobilski, Robert Leroy Baker
