  • Publication number: 20050047366
Abstract: During a random access communication opportunity (12), user equipment (20) utilizes either or both of an adaptive modulation and coding-based communication protocol (26) and an HARQ-based communication protocol (27) to achieve improved performance. This can avoid the need to establish dedicated channels (13) to support the required communications. In one embodiment, a plurality of adaptive modulation and coding-based communication protocols are provided with a given protocol being selected as a function of one or more governing criteria. For example, the protocol can be selected as a function of a quality condition of the communication path, as a function of a memory buffer, and so forth.

  • Publication number: 20050043052
Abstract: The present invention relates to methods of operation of a communication device and to corresponding communication devices. In particular the invention relates to a first method of operation of a communication device, wherein some pilot bits associated with data bits are transmitted with a power at least partly dependent on the data rate at which the data bits are transmitted. At the base station, power control is carried out only on pilot bits with constant power, whereas channel estimation is carried out on all pilot bits. The invention also relates to a second method of operation of a communication device wherein all pilot bits associated with data bits are transmitted with one of a plurality of powers, at least partly dependent on the data rate at which the data bits are transmitted. At the base station a power control process compares the received signal with a plurality of thresholds, and sends a power control signal to the communication device based on the result of the comparison.

  • Publication number: 20050003847
Abstract: A method and system for dynamic rate switching via medium access channel layer signaling is disclosed, wherein data rates for high data rate channels are automatically shifted up or down based on a predetermined metric. In a preferred embodiment, data rates are automatically shifted up or down based on transmit channel gain required to maintain a required signal to noise ratio.

  • Publication number: 20040248287
Abstract: Multi-array systems useful for performing assays on multiple biomolecule arrays simultaneously while minimizing sample volume are provided. Apparatuses and kits comprising the multi-array systems also provided. Methods of using the multi-array systems in assays such as hybridization arrays are also provided, as well as methods of producing the multi-array systems.

  • Publication number: 20040219919
Abstract: The present invention provides an advantageous method for transitioning reliably between scheduling modes on an uplink in a wireless communication system. Transitions between scheduling modes are effected as far as possible using signaling between a wireless communication device and a base station, providing low delay transitions in the majority of cases. Advantageously, signaling direct between the wireless communication device and a network control element may be employed. In addition, the method may operate effectively even when the wireless communication device is in communication with a number of base stations in a soft handoff situation because the network control element may act to ensure that all base stations correspond to the current scheduling mode employed by the wireless communication device.

  • Publication number: 20040175744
Abstract: The present invention relates to the identification of the over expression of certain genes encoding certain secreted and membrane-bound proteins in breast, lung, colon and kidney cancers. Knowledge that these genes are over expressed in the cancers is useful for the detection, diagnosis, prevention and treatment of the specific cancers.

  • Publication number: 20040067492
Abstract: The present invention provides novel methods for detection of gene. A method for detecting RNA molecules of interest in which oligonucleotide primers uniquely complementary to specific RNA molecules are used as primers for reverse transcribing target RNAs with reverse transcriptase, or any enzyme that possesses reverse transcription activity, is provided. The invention eliminates the need for labeling or converting the target RNA by incorporating detectable labels in the elongation product of reverse transcription of the probe-bound target RNA in the sample.

  • Patent number: 5890544
Abstract: A fire extinguisher system is provided including a wall mount with an open front. The wall mount is adapted to be situated within an opening formed in a recipient surface such that the open front is in coplanar relationship therewith. Next provided is a housing having a closed front face with an aperture formed therein. A fire extinguisher is provided having an actuation assembly adapted to release the fire extinguishing material upon the detection of a temperature above a predetermined amount. The fire extinguisher is situated within the housing with the actuation assembly protruding from the aperture thereof. During use, the housing may be removably situated within the wall mount with the front face of the housing remaining in coplanar relationship with the open front of the wall mount.
