  • Publication number: 20060028425
Abstract: A system for operating a color flat panel display (FPD) is provided that includes a color FPD, a light source, and a display processing device. The color FPD has an adjustable color depth and is configured to reflect ambient light. The light source transmits light through the bottom surface of the color FPD. The display processing device is coupled to the color FPD and decreases the color depth of the color FPD when the light source is activated and increases the color depth of the color FPD when the light source is turned off.

  • Publication number: 20060007098
Abstract: A display screen is capable of having regions having different switching speeds as well as regions that are not switched. One region having a first switching speed may be for colour mode display and the other region having a second switching speed different from the first may be for monochrome mode display. Other regions may be off and not switched. In alternative versions, three or more switched regions may be established on a display screen. For example, a monochrome region may be nested inside a colour region, in which the colour region may be nested between off regions.

  • Publication number: 20050270252
Abstract: In a handheld computing device that includes a backlit display having a variable-intensity backlight, and a function key, a method for controlling an intensity of light produced by the backlight involves the steps of (1) setting the intensity to a first level sufficient for viewing information on the display under first ambient lighting; and (2) upon activation of the function key, setting the intensity to a second level sufficient for viewing information on the backlit display under second ambient lighting that is different than the first ambient lighting.

  • Publication number: 20050246365
Abstract: Standard word lists that are often used for such operations as predictive text, spell checking, and word completion are based on general linguistic data that might not accurately reflect actual text usage patterns of particular users. Systems and methods of building and using a custom word list for use in text operations on an electronic device are provided. A collection of text items associated with a user of the electronic device is scanned to identify words in the text items. A weighting is then assigned to each identified word, and the words and corresponding weightings are stored.

  • Publication number: 20050192045
Abstract: A holster for use with a handheld device and a peripheral device is disclosed herein. The holster provides a mating structure for holding a peripheral device so that a mobile device charges the peripheral device. The holster removes the inconvenience of having to charge a peripheral off a battery charger at work or home by permitting the peripheral to charge off the handheld device. The holster can be used with any handheld device and peripheral device, such as a cellular phone and a wireless headset.

  • Publication number: 20050073446
Abstract: A mobile device having a keyboard that is selectively illuminated to indicate an active portion is disclosed. The active portion of a key, a set of keys, or the entire keyboard is illuminated, or optionally illuminated using different illumination intensity or color, to indicate the active input mode. This provides an indication of the keyboard input mode without relying upon an onscreen or other indicator.

  • Publication number: 20050060669
Abstract: A system and method for providing a screen saver for a display panel in a mobile electronic device are provided. After a time period of inactivity has been sensed, a screen saver image is retrieved from memory and transmitted to a display panel. The method and system also preferably provide means for controlling the colour of the screen saver image to balance the aging of the primary colours within the display panel.

  • Publication number: 20050041139
Abstract: A method and system for automatically adjusting a backlight intensity level for displays is disclosed. The system and method are implemented in electronic devices having a camera and digital backlit displays, such that the camera is used to determine an ambient light level and the backlight level is adjusted according to the determined ambient light level. In particular, when the camera is not in use for capturing images by the user, the automatic backlight adjustment system captures a first image with the camera to determine an initial ambient light level, and then captures a second image with the camera at a later time to determine a subsequent ambient light level. The subsequent and initial ambient light levels are compared to each other and the backlight intensity level is either increased or decreased a predetermined amount for optimal viewing and low power consumption. Backlight intensity determination can be performed on the basis of a single image instead of a differential between two images.

  • Publication number: 20050035940
Abstract: A device and a method are provided for establishing a monochromatic background light source in an electronic device with a field sequential liquid crystal display. The device and method provide for the continuous illumination of one or more of a plurality of color backlights of a field sequential liquid crystal display to provide a monochromatic source of light behind the liquid crystal layer of the display. The intensities of the one or more of the plurality of color backlights may be selected to achieve a user selected color, or the intensities may be chosen to reduce power consumption. The monochromatic mode may be selected while in another mode of operation.

  • Patent number: 6271605
Abstract: A battery disconnect system is provided for a device having a battery and load. The battery disconnect system includes a switch that is operative to connect the battery to the load when the switch is in a closed state. The switch is also operative to disconnect the battery from the load when the switch is in an open state. The battery disconnect system also includes a switch controller that is coupled to the switch. The switch controller is operative to cause the switch to enter the closed state in response to receipt of a first signal from a first external source. The switch controller is also operative to cause the switch to enter the open state in response to receipt of a second signal from a second external source.

  • Patent number: 6104759
Abstract: An improved power supply system involves load-leveling the large transient currents drawn by a high power, low duty-cycle load application circuit by means of a high performance capacitive charge storage device, such as a super-capacitor or a network of super-capacitors. The improved power supply system allows the high power load application circuit to be driven by a limited energy power source, such as a battery or the power supplied to a PCMCIA slot by a host computer. When the input voltage source is a battery, the improved power supply system allows for a substantial increase in the battery's operational life. The inventive system is particularly useful for managing power supply requirements for miniaturized wireless transmission systems, such as two-way pagers or radio modems, which employ low duty-cycle packet-switched RF transmitters.
