  • Publication number: 20060254471
Abstract: A flexible modesty panel is able to conform to curved furniture shapes to allow the modesty panel to be used in connection with furniture such as continuous classroom desk systems that may assume an arbitrary configuration. For example, the flexible modesty panel may be used with a modular desk system configured to form rows of continuous curving desk surfaces. The modesty panel may have a plurality of grooves on one side. Panels may be longitudinally interconnected using connectors disposed within the grooves and may supported using panel support brackets that connect to the grooves. Bolts having oblong heads that are designed to slip into the grooves in the modesty panel enable panel support brackets to be connected at arbitrary positions along the length of the modesty panel. A top groove in the modesty panel may be provided to enable name cards to be supported on the top edge of the modesty panel.

  • Publication number: 20060254479
Abstract: A modular classroom furniture system allows modular furniture components to be used to create desk surfaces having a plurality of different shapes, such as desk surfaces approximating an arc with an arbitrary radius of curvature, without requiring the desk surfaces to be custom-fabricated to fit the configuration of the particular classroom. According to an embodiment of the invention, a desk surface may be formed from table tops that are configured to be supported by support plates, such that a semi-continuous desk surface of arbitrary radius may be created from modular components without requiring the components to be custom manufactured for the particular classroom design. The table tops may be generally trapezoidal in shape and the support plates may be generally square or assume another desired shape. By allowing the table tops to be secured to the support plates in any desired angular orientation, a combination of tables may be deployed to form a desk surface that will assume a desired shape.

  • Publication number: 20060202536
Abstract: A chair is configured to allow the effective seating area to be varied to accommodate a range of body sizes. One or more support arms pivotably support a backrest for translational movement while allowing the backrest to rotate relative to the seating surface. The combination of translational movement with rotational movement allows a greater or lesser amount of seating surface to be exposed depending on the size of the person using the chair. Movement of the backrest may be resisted at both pivot points using springs of differential strengths. Optionally, rotation of the default resting angle of the backrest may be synchronized with translation of the backrest. The chair may be designed to both stack and nest to enable it to be stored in a plurality of manners.
