  • Patent number: 7476346
Abstract: The invention relates to compositions that prevent expansion of a fire, suppress existing fire, as well as methods of preparing and using such compositions. The composition is comprised of water, pseudo-plastic high yield suspending agent and starch. Compositions may contain additional functional agents, such as rheological, wetting, foaming, coloring, chelating, antimicrobial and stabilizing agents. In the description of the present invention, all composition modifications are referred to as compositions. The composition, an augmentation of water, exhibits the characteristics of a sag resistant aqueous gel in the tank, but has shear thinning capacity, allowing the composition to be pumped or sprayed as easily as water. At the point of impact, when the sprayed composition is again at rest, it instantly reverts to a sag resistant aqueous gel. The composition also forms an intumescent, surface char layer upon contacting a fire.
    Type: Grant

  • Patent number: 7220800
Abstract: A contact lens blocking composition with desirable melt properties can comprise a water soluble polymer such as a polyalkylpolyimine combined with an absorbent disintegrant or with a filler such as a highly soluble salt composition or both. The blocking composition can be readily removed from a shaped contact lens after machining and from the mandrel or other tool used in shaping the lens. The blocking composition is readily removed using an aqueous wash, aqueous washing solutions or ultrasonic cleaning procedures.
    Type: Grant

  • Patent number: 6548579
Abstract: The invention is directed to an adhesive composition comprising a water based component including a film-forming polymer and a particulate thermoplastic component selected from the group consisting of thermoplastic polymers, thermoplastic resins, hot melt adhesive compositions, and mixtures thereof. The thermoplastic component has a mean particle size of from about 10 microns to about 1,500 microns. The adhesive composition is useful as a one-shot bookbinding adhesive, a primer composition as well as a second-shot adhesive for two-shot bookbinding method. The invention is also directed to the bookbinding methods using the adhesive composition.

  • Patent number: 5997574
Abstract: A rheologically modified, osmotically balanced dispersion for an implant for the body. The dispersion includes an osmotic control agent of preferably polyvinylpyrrolidinone, a rheological agent of preferably guar gum, and an antimicrobial. Methods for filling an implant are also disclosed. The osmotic control agent or first polymeric agent is present in the dispersion in an amount effective to substantially balance the osmotic pressure of the implant with the osmotic pressure of the portion of the body into which it is implanted. The rheological agent or second polymeric agent forms a three-dimensional network and is present in the dispersion in an amount effective such that the fill material is pseudoplastic. Both the first and second polymeric agents are biocompatible.
    Type: Grant

  • Patent number: 4890444
Abstract: A fluted filter media to end cap bonding process and fluid filters formed by the bonding process. The process comprises coating at least one end cap and/or at least one fluted edge of the filter media with a bonding composition, contacting the end cap with the edge of the fluted filter media and curing the bonding composition coating to form a strong, continuous filter media to end cap bond. The bonding composition comprises, in adhesive latex, a thermoplastic resin and an amount of ungelatinized granular starch effective to complex a major portion of the latex water during curing of the bonding composition.
