  • Publication number: 20170121909
Abstract: The disclosure provides methods and compositions for increasing the dry strength of paper. The invention utilizes a tailored strength agent whose size and shape is tailored to fit into the junction points between flocs of a paper sheet. The strength agents is in contact with the slurry for just enough time to collect at the junction points but not so much that it can migrate away from there.

  • Publication number: 20170037574
Abstract: Disclosed are compositions and methods useful in applications relating to papermaking. The compositions and methods of the present invention comprise aldehyde-functionalized polymers designed to impart high paper strength and enhance water removal during the papermaking process. The aldehyde-functionalized polymers are of relatively low molecular weight, and comprise amino and/or amide groups mono-reacted and di-reacted at a ratio of at least about 1.5 to 1. The low molecular weight polymers of the present invention have the same strength and dewatering performance as corresponding high molecular weight polymers.

  • Publication number: 20160097161
Abstract: The invention provides methods and compositions for increasing the strength of a paper sheet. The method involves adding to the paper sheet an amine containing polymer. The amine containing polymer interacts with materials such as GPAM or starch to make the paper stronger in terms including tensile strength, surface strength and bulk strength.

  • Patent number: 8753480
Abstract: The current invention includes a composition having stability additives of selected inorganic salts and/or organic incorporated into an aldehyde-functionalized polymer product. The stability additive can be post added to the finished polymer product, added to the reaction vessel prior to inducing functionalization of the non-functionalized polymer, or added at any stage during the functionalization reaction. Methods for forming the composition and using the composition to produce a cellulosic fiber-based medium are also disclosed.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: October 12, 2012
Date of Patent: June 17, 2014
    Assignee: Nalco Company
Inventors: Heinrich E. Bode, Michael R. St. John, Mei Liu, Robert M. Lowe
  • Patent number: 8747616
Abstract: The invention is directed towards methods and compositions for improving the sizing of paper using PAE. Proper sizing of paper requires that a sizing agent adequately disperse so as to evenly distribute on the paper. Proper sizing also requires that the agent not cause runnability or chemical problems with other materials or equipment used in the papermaking process. PAE displays unexpected attributes that allow it to disperse sizing agents. Best of all it is not subject to the same overdose effect of typical emulsifiers such as cationic starch. As a result PAE is an excellent option for use in sizing paper.
