Patent number: 6951591Abstract: Laminates of thermoplastic films and nonwoven fibrous webs are made at high speeds on the order of about 700 fpm to about 1200 fpm. Bond strengths of film and nonwoven laminates are effectively controlled to make breathable laminates at high speeds. Air cooling devices cause the air to flow substantially parallel to the extruded plastic web during drawdown and provide a plurality of cooling air vortices to effectively cool the web. Film gauge control is also achieved by the method.Type: GrantFiled: September 30, 2002Date of Patent: October 4, 2005Assignee: Clopay Plastic Products Company, Inc.Inventors: Robert M. Patent number: 6623586Abstract: A product, apparatus and process for lamination of a sheet of polymer film onto a sheet of light weight web material. An incoming sheet of material is slit into narrow webs, which may be folded by a folding guide, and separated by use of turning bars and guides. The narrow webs then enter an embossing or laminating station. The lamination process joins the two sheets which are of different widths to allow the process to produce stock for different final products. The laminate of folded webs and polymer may be slit and/or unfolded prior to being stored on a take-up reel.Type: GrantFiled: April 10, 2001Date of Patent: September 23, 2003Assignee: Clopay Plastic Products Company, Inc.Inventors: Robert M. Mortellite, Thomas Mushaben, Kevin Preston

Patent number: 6214147Abstract: A process for in-line lamination of a non-oven fibrous sheet to an extruded polymer film. A non-oven fibrous sheet is slit into a plurality of narrow non-oven fibrous webs. The narrow non-oven fibrous webs are spaced by turning the webs around a plurality of spaced webs. An extruded polymer film is laminated onto a surface of the spaced webs to provide a laminate of the extruded polymer film and the spaced narrow webs having a portion of the extruded polymer film between the spaced non-woven fibrous webs.Type: GrantFiled: May 20, 1999Date of Patent: April 10, 2001Assignee: Clopay Plastic Products Company, Inc.Inventors: Robert M. Method of making an ultra soft cloth-like embossed plastic film having post-embossed stretched areas
Patent number: 5296184Abstract: An embossed plastic film is made ultra soft and cloth-like by providing a plurality of post-embossed stretched areas along lines that are spaced uniformly across its width and length. The stretched areas are thinner than the unstretched areas. Films also have unique textures and offer cloth-like or non-woven appearances.Type: GrantFiled: October 28, 1992Date of Patent: March 22, 1994Assignee: Clopay Plastic Products Company, Inc.Inventors: Pai-Chuan Wu, Thomas R. Ryle, Robert M. Mortellite, John D. Toppen -
Patent number: 5254111Abstract: An improved barrier cuff for disposable absorbent articles such as a diaper is disclosed. A diaper has a liquid-pervious liner, a liquid-impervious backsheet, and an absorbent core disposed between the liner and backsheet, and elastically contractible leg cuffs. The cuff has a proximal edge and a distal edge and is disposed adjacent margins of the disposable diaper and defines a waste containment pocket with the backsheet and liner frontsheet. The cuff being made of an embossed plastic film having a pattern of stretched and unstretched regions. The plastic film provides ultrasoft cloth-like and quiet material for use as a cuff in comparison to known plastic film or laminates. Leakage prevention and comfort to the user are increased because the body exudates are less capable of leaking out of the absorbent article prior to absorption into the core and the wearing comfort is provided by the ultrasoft cuff.Type: GrantFiled: December 9, 1992Date of Patent: October 19, 1993Assignee: Clopay Plastic Products Company, Inc.Inventors: Leopoldo V. Cancio, Pai-Chuan Wu, Thomas R. Ryle, Robert M. Mortellite, J. David Toppen

Patent number: 4668463Abstract: A method for producing a linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE) film by slot-die extrusion from an extrudate having an inherent draw resonance tendency whereby draw resonance is eliminated in the production of film at high speeds. Film of commercially uniform gauge thickness is obtained having significantly improved strength over films formed by conventional slot-die extrusion of LLDPE.Type: GrantFiled: July 21, 1982Date of Patent: May 26, 1987Assignee: Clopay CorporationInventors: Leopoldo V. Patent number: 4523620Abstract: A combination window shade and clutch assembly is provided to prevent over-tensioning of the spring motor of the window shade. The clutch assembly includes spool means connected to one end of the spring motor and cup means, both movable along the window shade shaft. The spool means and cup means are provided with clutch means in the form of mating, tapered locking surfaces adapted to engage one another. The cup means engages retaining means formed in the rotatable housing of the window shade so that rotation of the housing is transmitted to the spool means through the cup means while their locking surfaces are in engagement.Type: GrantFiled: January 17, 1983Date of Patent: June 18, 1985Assignee: Clopay CorporationInventor: Robert M. Patent number: 4217327Abstract: Plastic films or sheets having tear lines formed therein are disclosed. These films are made by forming a score along a predetermined line in the surface of a plastic film to form a tear line and then restoring the scored film surface without eliminating the line of tear. The products tear very easily along predetermined lines even though the restored plastic films have enhanced impact strengths. By restoring the surface of the scored film, score lines become invisible to the naked eye and the useful life of the film is extended. Single-ply or multi-ply products are disclosed including products having an embossed or textutred surface, still without eliminating the capability for a smooth line of tear. The products have many utilities as structural materials which may be sized or torn by hand, including wall coverings, window shade coverings, rupturable packages and envelopes, to mention a few.Type: GrantFiled: March 27, 1978Date of Patent: August 12, 1980Assignee: Clopay CorporationInventors: Leo V.
