  • Patent number: 4516889
Abstract: A tool is disclosed that offers precision fine adjustment of a cutting tool bit on the tool, having an opening provided with a conical seat, an internally-threaded tool adjustment cartridge having a conical surface engageable with the conical seat, an externally-threaded tool ajustment member threadably engaged within the cartridge, a tensioning mechanism for maintaining the conical surface in self-centering engagement with the conical seat, external gear teeth on the cartridge, and a worm wheel engageable with the external gear teeth of the cartridge to provide for very small movements of the cartridge. Fine adjustment can be performed automatically or manually, and may be performed by access to either axial end of the tool, or to the side thereof adjacent the tool bit.

  • Patent number: 4473937
Abstract: A novel machining center having a plurality of tools, including adjustable tools incorporating an externally accessible rotatable socket for fine-adjusting the tool bit thereon; a tool drive for actuating each tool; a storage device for storing a plurality of tools, at least one of which is one of the adjustable tools, the storage device being operable to move the tools between first and second positions; an automatic tool changer for transporting a tool in both directions between said first position and the tool drive; a powered wrench engagable with said socket on an adjustable tool disposed in said second position; a numerical controller for controlling the operations of said machining center; and a technique for inputing to the control means information as to the identity of a given adjustable tool requiring adjustment and the amount of adjustment desired, said powered wrench being actuatable to engage said socket of said given adjustable tool in response to said information when the given tool is in said

  • Patent number: 4250775
Abstract: The present invention relates generally to numerically controlled contour machining, and particularly to an apparatus and method for performing such operations on a "bar-type" horizontal boring mill using the spindle bar to vary the cutting radius of the rotating cutting tool and the machine table to feed the workpiece toward the cutting tool.

    Assignee: DeVlieg Machine Company
Inventors: Richard A. Jerue, Robert M. Ortlieb
  • Patent number: 4206665
Abstract: There is disclosed a presettable tool supporting device for machine tools which permits the tool to be preset in its tool holder away from the machine and then quickly and easily mounted on the machine in an accurately predetermined position, thus eliminating the need for adjusting the tool on the machine.

  • Patent number: 4043229
Abstract: There is disclosed a self-retracting tool holder assembly for mounting a tool on a machine in a predetermined location with respect to a workpiece, the assembly incorporating a tool holder mounted for pivotal movement about an axis so arranged that when the tool is fed by the machine into engagement with the workpiece the forces created by such engagement will cause the tool holder to pivot about said axis to advance the tool into a seated machining position in which the machining portion of the tool is displaced into the workpiece both in the feed direction and in a direction at right angles thereto, and spring means to automatically retract the tool to an inactive position out of engagement with the workpiece when the feed of the tool stops, whereby when the tool is returned by the machine the tool will not cause a drag line to be formed on the just-machined surface of the workpiece.
