  • Method of manufacturing metal strip

    Abstract: In the manufacture of metal strip, the strip is cast in a caster (1) and it is then passed through a temperature control zone (5) where the temperature of the strip is brought to a predetermined level. To adjust the temperature of the strip, as its speed of passage through the temperature control zone varies, the temperature control means must be adjusted. Until operating conditions have stabilized, it is necessary to hang a part of the strip leaving the caster in a loop so as to accommodate variations in operating conditions.

    Abstract: The device comprises a body of thermally conductive material having an upper part through which liquid coolant is passed and a lower part which is submerged in the molten metal to be cooled. The lower part has a dimension which is greater than the corresponding dimension in a higher horizontal cross-sectional plane so that a skull of solidified metal is locked to the body by extending around the greater dimension.

Each assembly has a face portion of refractory material supported by a backing plate.     Abstract: A heat transfer conduit for extracting heat from a molten metal in transit from a containing vessel or delivery system includes at least two elongate segments separable along separation lines which lie generally in the direction of a longitudinal center line of the conduit, which in use, define a unitary structure. The segments can be disassembled following use for the removal of solidified material and other matter from the conduit interior.
