  • Patent number: 6883576
Abstract: A quick change roll-fed high speed labeling system for improving labeling speed and precision label placement comprises a conveyor for moving articles to be labeled, and an infeed screw assembly for spacing and stabilizing the articles. The infeed screw assembly comprises a feedscrew having a plurality of pockets for receiving and properly spacing successive incoming articles, which has a gear drive, and means for pivoting the feedscrew both vertically and horizontally. Additional system elements include a rotatable starwheel assembly having a plurality of spaced pockets for receiving individual ones of the articles therein, a rotatable vacuum drum assembly, and a supply of roll fed labels, wherein the labels are dispensed singly onto a label receiving face of the rotatable vacuum drum assembly. The rotatable vacuum drum assembly comprises a unique three-ported valving system, for reducing or eliminating glue clogging problems during system operation.

  • Patent number: 5522960
Abstract: A method and apparatus for applying a label onto a substantially cylindrical article is disclosed. A thin layer, heat activated adhesive hacked label is fed onto the surface of a rotating label transport drum so that the adhesive back faces outward from the drum. The adhesive is heated as the drum rotates so that the adhesive obtains a sufficient temperature to melt. Articles are conveyed into tangential spinning engagement with the drum and into rotative engagement with the leading edge of the label as the label moves into the article wrapping position so that the label wraps about the article and adheres thereto. The articles can include crayons which are somewhat tapered along their length. The articles are conveyed at a skewed angle so that the label wraps about the tapered crayon with end-to-end label alignment thereof.

The crayon is conveyed onto the drum surface so that the wider "butt" end of the crayon engages the leading edge of the label before the more narrow and of the crayon engages the label.

  • Patent number: 5279495
Abstract: A mail insertion machine (10) having an elongated insert track (12) with one or more insert dispensing devices (16) with rotary insert feeding mechanisms (22) for depositing inserts at longitudinally-space movable driving members (14) on the insert track includes a power train interconnected between the driving members and each insert dispensing device for driving them in a predetermined phase relationship with a phase-adjustment mechanism for adjusting the phase relationship.
