Abstract: In one embodiment, a connection device couples a mobile device having a touch-sensitive display screen to a component of home automation system. The connection device couples a wired serial communication interface of the mobile device to a wired serial communication interface of the component. The mobile device executes a configuration application (app), whose a user interface is displayed on the touch-sensitive display screen. Using the user interface, a user may configure the component to join a Wi-Fi network, as well as configure more advanced settings of the component. Similarly, in response to further input on the user interface, the configuration app on the mobile device may send additional control commands via the connection device, or the Wi-Fi network, to the component, to configure additional settings of the component.

The system is based on a general purpose computer and is capable of interfacing with, controlling or managing a wide variety of audio, video, telecommunications, data communications or other devices. The system includes a programming environment for creating services or user experiences that may incorporate features or functionalities of several devices that are conventionally operated as separate, standalone devices.

Abstract: A programmable multimedia controller, including audio and video switches, controls audio video, telephony, data, security, motor-operated, relay-operated, and/or other types of devices. Modules of the controller receive and output audio and video in a number of analog and digital formats, allowing the system to be interconnected to a wide range of devices. Small form factor general purpose personal computers may be operatively connected to provide processing power for the system, and to execute application programs. Further, a personal DVD player, or another device capable of displaying data and generating an audio output in response to user selection, may be used to control the programmable multimedia controller as part of embedded control technique. Additionally, a video overlay feature which allows video images, still frames, graphics, and/or text to be overlaid at any desired location of a display screen, is provided in some embodiments.
