Publication number: 20060030818Abstract: The present invention is related to a system and method of securing or retaining a medical access device in a desired position using a retention member or bolster having a diameter at least four time the diameter of the tube portion of the medical access device. In one embodiment, the medical access device is a percutaneous endoscopic colostomy (PEC) tube which has an internal bolster with a diameter over five times the diameter of the PEC tube. The increased diameter of the bolster distributes the tension over a greater surface area to minimize complications such as necrosis associated with long-term implantation of the device. The increased diameter also promotes adhesion of the layers traversed by the medical device to prevent leakage around the PEC stoma.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 25, 2005Publication date: February 9, 2006Inventor: Robert McVey
