Method and apparatus for securing and authenticating encoded data and documents containing such data
Patent number: 7725726Abstract: A method and apparatus for determining the distance between transitions from a first logical state to a second logical state stored on a medium (i.e., a document). This determination is used to precisely characterize the information pattern in order to authenticate the information and the medium on which the information is stored. The invention uses a reader having a leading and trailing read apparatus which allow information to be read simultaneously from two or more locations spaced a known distance apart. The distance between the centerlines of each read apparatus is preferably an odd integer multiple of one half the distance between logical clock transitions. The distance between a first transition at the leading read apparatus and a next transition at the trailing read apparatus is used as a reference (i.e., the “Reference Value”). The Reference Value is compared with the distance between the first transition and the next transition on the medium (i.e., the “Jitter Value”).Type: GrantFiled: August 20, 2007Date of Patent: May 25, 2010Assignee: Semtek Innovative Solutions CorporationInventors: Clay von Mueller, Robert Mos -

Publication number: 20060049256Abstract: A secure magnetic stripe card stripe reader (MSR) module and software system capable of encrypting the magnetic stripe data to CPI, SDP and CISP standards for use in point of sale (POS) and other applications requiring data security using non secure networks and computing devices. Additionally, when incorporated within an attachment for conventional personal digital assistant (PDA) or cell phone or stationary terminal, provides encrypted data from the magnetic head assembly providing compliance with Federal Information Processing Standards Publication Series FIPS 140 covering security and tampering standards. Moreover, this module and software system includes the capability of providing secure POS transactions to legacy transaction processing systems and POS terminals transparently to the existing infrastructure. Furthermore, this module and software system includes the capability of transparently providing detection of fraudulently copied magnetic stripe cards.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 12, 2005Publication date: March 9, 2006Inventors: Clay von Mueller, Robert Mos, Bob Mos

Publication number: 20050198318Abstract: The present invention is directed to a combination wireless and wired token access distributed network and system comprising a secure locator network (SLN) system having one or more network system controllers (NSCs), and where the data collection and transmission nodes (DCTNs) are magnetic stripe card readers or chip card readers that broadcast the data read from the data token card to data access points (DAPs) using wireless communications. The DAPs store the data in a table which is made available for TCP/IP access. The NSCs contain processing software which poll the DAPs at regular intervals, captures the resulting data table, parses said data and stores it in a database. This data is available for applications residing on the NSCs. If the SLN is connected to a larger network, such as a global computer network, applications on other linked computers or data processors can access the data for processing, depending upon security considerations and protocols.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 6, 2004Publication date: September 8, 2005Inventors: Clay von Mueller, Kyle Zaidain, Jonathan Sarkisian, Konrad Andersen, Robert Mos, Kim Zaidain

Patent number: 5780828Abstract: A method and apparatus for reading and writing data to a medium which moves at an uncontrolled velocity relative to a read/write apparatus with which the data is read and written. The read/write apparatus comprises one write head and two read heads. The first read head is spaced apart from the second read head by an odd integer multiple of one half of a bit cell. The two read heads read preexisting data from the medium and generate a write clock which is used to synchronize a write operation using the write head. Delay logic ensures that the write head is over that portion of the medium on which new data is to be written. By measuring the amount of time between detection of a transition at the first read head and detection of that transition at the second read head, the velocity of the medium with respect to the read/write apparatus is determined and the amount of time that must elapse between the reading of old data and the writing of new data which overwrites the old data is determined.Type: GrantFiled: February 15, 1996Date of Patent: July 14, 1998Assignee: DH Technology, Inc.Inventors: Robert Mos, Clay Von Mueller
