Abstract: An earpiece includes a portion that seals the earpiece in the user's ear, preventing or reducing sounds from an external environment (e.g., the outside world) from entering the user's ear canal and being heard by the user. The earpiece also includes a duct from the user's ear canal to the external environment, which may be open or closed. Whether the duct is open or closed is automatically determined, such as based at least in part on audio measurements at a microphone of the earpiece. When the duct is open, sounds can pass from the external environment to the user's ear canal, active noise cancellation (ANC) is disabled, and an appropriate equalization (EQ) setting is used. When the duct is closed, sounds from the external environment are prevented from passing through to the user's ear canal (or are reduced), ANC is enabled, and an appropriate EQ setting is used.

Abstract: A water hydrant for suppling potable water from a water source has an internal movable riser contained within a housing that extends beneath the ground to a depth below which freezing temperatures cannot reach. A chamber housing located at a distal end of the hydrant, beneath the frost line, contains a valve which may be actuated by the moving riser to provide a flow of water from the water source and through the riser. The chamber housing is configured to receive residual water from the riser when the flow of water has been shut off by the valve and to store the water beneath the frost line under sanitary conditions. A piston is disposed on a distal end of the riser, is slidably disposed within the chamber housing, and moves with the riser to expel water from the chamber housing when a handle of the hydrant is subsequently moved to reopen the valve.

Abstract: A user interface for screen phones monitors telephone line state information and displays user interface controls and telephone line status information dependent on the telephone line state. The user interface includes a display element referred to as a call slip that expands and collapses in response to changes in telephone line state and user input. The call slip updates the information that it displays based on telephone line state changes and information communicated from one or more telephony monitoring applications. The call slip displays user interface controls representing tasks that are dependent on information derived from a telephone call, such as caller ID information. The software used to control the display of call slips and to monitor telephone line state is part of a software platform that may be customized for a particular device or application.
