  • Patent number: 6166306
Abstract: A method is disclosed for creating and utilizing genetic male-sterile Catharanthus for hybrid periwinkle production. The method makes use of a mutated male sterility allele which suppresses pollen production in otherwise fertile plants. Individual plants expressing the male sterility factor are incapable of self pollination and can be used as female parents in hybrid seed production. Methods are disclosed for transferring this system into any inbred line of interest for use in hybrid seed production in Catharanthus.

  • Patent number: 5491285
Abstract: The present invention relates to a disease resistant Catharanthus seed, Catharanthus plant, Catharanthus variety and Catharanthus hybrid. More specifically, the invention relates to a Catharanthus plant having resistance to the fungal disease Phytophthorao. The invention also relates to an increased level of resistance to aphids and other pests and an increased level of total alkaloid content. The invention further relates to the method of crossing Catharanthus plants containing the resistance to Phytophthora to produce disease resistance and increased total alkaloid level in Catharanthus plants and in other crop plants.
