  • Publication number: 20240069765
Abstract: A system can include a processing device operatively coupled with the one or more memory devices, to perform operations that include writing data to the one or more memory devices and performing one or more scan operations on a management unit containing the data to determine a current value of a chosen data state metric. Each scan operation can be performed using a corresponding predetermined read-time parameter value. The operations can include determining whether the current value of the chosen data state metric satisfies a criterion, and can also include, responsive to determining that the current value of the chosen data state metric satisfies the criterion, selecting a remedial operation by determining whether redundancy metadata is included in a fault tolerant data stripe on the one or more memory devices. The operations can also include performing the remedial operation with respect to the management unit.

  • Patent number: 10142673
Abstract: Access to programs using network connected digital video recording devices is disclosed. A DVR causes display of a content guide including a unit identification area. When the unit identification area is updated, the content guide also updates to reflect programs available on the currently selected DVR. The content guide of a remotely connected DVR can thus be displayed, from which programs are selected for playback. Playback can be resumed from a point at which a viewer terminated viewing, either at the local or remote location, or from the beginning of the program.

  • Patent number: 7917008
Abstract: Communication and resolution of potential recording conflicts are disclosed. In one aspect, a request for recording a new program is received, and recording schedules are examined to determine whether another program had been previously scheduled for recording at the same time. If so, a display that illustrates and allows resolution of the conflict is automatically provided. In another aspect, a recording queue and an exception list provide efficient identification of conflicts and management of scheduled recordings. The recording queue lists each program to be recorded, and the exception list identifies conflicting pairs in the recording queue and indicates which item in each pair is respectively retained (preempting) and deferred (preempted). Canceling a preempting recording removes it from the recording queue and the conflict from the exception list to reinstate a preempted program. Channel guides that illustrate recording conflicts are also provided.

  • Patent number: 5472021
Abstract: A membrane closure which prevents spillage during installation of a water bottle onto a dispenser. The membrane closure provides a water tight seal which is opened after the water bottle is installed by generating a hydraulic shock wave within the bottle. The first embodiment of the membrane seal is folded multiple times then unfolds when subjected to a hydraulic shock wave. The second embodiment has a frangible membrane seal which bursts when subjected to a hydraulic shock wave. The membrane may be weakened along a desired rupture pattern. The third embodiment has a membrane seal attached to the water bottle with two different adhesives, a releasable adhesive which releases when the shock wave is initiated, and a permanent adhesive that prevents the seal from completely detaching from the water bottle. Three methods are presented for generating the hydraulic shock wave to open the membrane seal. In the first method, the water bottle is positioned just above the water dispenser and lowered rapidly.

  • Patent number: 5456294
Abstract: A bottle cap having a valve which provides a water tight seal to prevent spillage when a water bottle is inverted for installation onto a water dispenser, but which can be opened after the water bottle is installed by generating a hydraulic shock wave within the bottle to open the valve. A first embodiment has a triple valve seal with mechanical interference between the valve pieces to create an initially water tight seal. A second embodiment employs a dual valve structure. A third embodiment employs a single valve structure. In the first three embodiments, the valves are pivotally attached to the valve body by flexible living hinges. A fourth embodiment has a single linearly sliding valve. Three methods are presented for generating the hydraulic shock wave to open the valve. In the first method, the water bottle is positioned just above the water dispenser and lowered rapidly.

  • Patent number: 5363890
Abstract: A device which prevents spillage when a water bottle is inverted for installation onto a water dispenser. The device establishes the flow of water from the water bottle into the water dispenser after a predetermined time delay from when the bottle is inverted. The device is a membrane closure which initially provides a water tight seal on the mouth of the water bottle, but which opens up to allow water to flow from the bottle after a predictable time delay. Thus, the user can slowly and carefully invert the water bottle and place it in the correct position. Three embodiments are presented: 1) a membrane seal which is folded multiple times to create an initially water tight seal, which, when the water bottle is inverted, slowly unfolds due to the hydrostatic pressure, thereby opening the seal and allowing the water to flow; 2) a membrane seal of a moisture sensitive material which is coated with a water impermeable material and which is scored in a desired rupture pattern.
