  • Publication number: 20040243884
Abstract: A system includes a mechanism to detect addition of a memory module. In response to the addition of the memory module, a memory test is run to test the new memory module for a defect. If an uncorrectable error is detected, a routine is activated to process the error. Depending on whether the defect occurred in the new memory module or existing memory module(s), different processing is performed.

  • Publication number: 20040243666
Abstract: A serial ATA interface calibrates serially connected components of a computer system linked by the interface to a negotiated data transmission speed. The interface negotiates the fastest data transmission speed supported by the serially connected components. Link parameters associated with the negotiated data transmission speed are calibrated and implemented in a Phy layer of the interface before data is transmitted across the interface. The calibrated link parameters include signal transmission settings for amplitude, pre-emphasis, equalization and timing. Default settings of the link parameters correspond to the slowest data transmission speed supported by the serially connected components. The serially connected components are calibrated each time system power is initialized. The serially connected components can be a host computer linked to a data storage device such as a backplane-based storage subsystem.

  • Publication number: 20040240822
Abstract: A method and structure for reducing optical signal loss in a silicon waveguide formed within a silicon-on-insulator (SOI) structure uses CMOS processing techniques to round the edges/corners of the silicon material along the extent of the waveguiding region. One exemplary set of processes utilizes an additional, sacrificial silicon layer that is subsequently etched to form silicon sidewall fillets along the optical waveguide, the fillets thus “rounding” the edges of the waveguide. Alternatively, the sacrificial silicon layer can be oxidized to consume a portion of the underlying silicon waveguide layer, also rounding the edges. Instead of using a sacrificial silicon layer, an oxidation-resistant layer may be patterned over a blanket silicon layer, the pattern defined to protect the optical waveguiding region.

  • Publication number: 20040243128
Abstract: An anchor screw assembly includes a screw having a threaded portion and a head portion to which a swing bolt is pivotally coupled. A clamp assembly includes lower and upper clamp portions assembled into connecting beams that are securable on the swing bolt by a fastener. The clamp portions include first passages for receiving an intermediate region of the swing bolt therethrough to receivably retain the clamp assembly on the connecting beam and on the swing bolt. The head portion of the screw includes a shoulder, and the lower clamp portion has a seat that frictionally engages the shoulder when the clamp assembly is fully secured on the connecting beam and swing bolt, thereby securing the swing bolt relative to the screw. Multiple screw assemblies are screwed into adjacent vertebrae, and a connecting member is secured by the clamp assemblies between the anchor screw assemblies to stabilize the vertebrae.

  • Publication number: 20040239268
Abstract: A wireless system uses a direct UHF radio frequency (RF) signal to control electric trains and train accessories. A controller, such as a handheld unit used by the toy train operator, accepts control commands and transmits encoded control data over a high frequency radio link directly to a receiver, on the toy train or train accessory, which decodes the commands and controls the toy train or toy train accessory functions with either unidirectional or bi-directional communication between the controller and the model train or train accessory. One controller has the ability to control many trains and other model train layout components such as signals and track switches even while other train operators are operating their trains on the same electric train track layout.
