    Abstract: A process for gasification of coal by combustion of a fuel and oxidizer in a preburner to produce steam at a temperature substantially above the minimum temperature at which steam and coal will react to produce carbon monoxide and hydrogen and introducing the steam and pulverized coal into a gasifier to react the coal and steam at a temperature above said minimum temperature throughout said gasifier.
