  • Patent number: 10955006
Abstract: A sealing arrangement includes a housing including a bore and a shaft extending through the bore in the housing. An inner annular sealing member includes an inner surface press fit on the shaft and having a plurality of radially outwardly projecting fins on an outer surface. An outer annular sealing member is press fit in the bore and includes a first end supporting a seal lip that sealingly engages an outer surface of the inner annular sealing member. The outer annular sealing member includes a second end that is disposed directly radially outward of and spaced from the radially outwardly projecting fins of the inner annular sealing member. When the shaft rotates, the radially outwardly projecting fins pro-actively/dynamically move air, contamination, particles, fluids etc. axially away from the sealing area.

  • Publication number: 20110163507
Abstract: A shaft seal assembly for use with a reciprocating or rotating shaft includes a shaft seal, a lubricant-storing ring, and a retainer. The retainer and ring can be formed as a subassembly and then combined with a shaft seal. The seal includes an annular body portion, a first sealing lip portion, and a first pocket portion. The first sealing lip portion has a substantially uniform axial dimension and is adapted to sealingly engage a shaft. The first pocket portion includes a plurality of pockets, each having an opening toward the first sealing lip portion. The plurality of pockets are each adapted to collect a working fluid when the shaft axially displaces in a first direction and to dispense the working fluid when the shaft axially displaces in a second direction. The assembly provides a lubricated shaft and seal that improves the effective life of the shaft seal.

  • Patent number: 7753377
Abstract: A shaft seal includes an elastomeric annular body having a radially inwardly protruding annular lip. An annular outer case receives the elastomeric annular body. An annular inner case is embedded into the elastomeric annular body. An annular insert is positioned adjacent the inner case. A backup/support insert is received in a recessed pocket in the elastomeric body and outboard of an axially extending annular bead protruding from the body and compressed sealingly against the radially inward extending leg of the seals annular outer case. The backup/support insert and axially extending annular bead act to prevent sealed fluid pressure from acting against a rind portion of the elastomeric body thus leaving outwardly extending beads of the rind portion free to compress or decompress to accommodate eccentric deflection of the shaft. The outer case, the insert, the backup insert and the inner case support the lip and compensate for shaft offset.

  • Publication number: 20100084823
Abstract: A hydraulically balanced radial seal is configured so that the hydraulic pressure of the fluid being sealed causes the primary dynamic sealing lip to be axially stretched longer and also incorporates a secondary static sealing lip whose beaded interior locks into a receiving groove in the exterior surface of the dynamic sealing lip and effects a seal between the two lips. The secondary static sealing lip being so disposed as to cause it to be compressed and shortened by the hydraulic pressure of the fluid being sealed an amount comparable to that which the primary dynamic sealing lip is being stretched under the same pressure, keeping the two lips locked together. This unique construction maintains the favorable hydraulic balance initially designed into the seal, enabling it to accommodate hydraulic pressures of over 225 psi.
