Patent number: 6610946Abstract: The power tool includes a body, a trigger mechanism and a manually operated locking member. The trigger mechanism is mounted to the body for rotation about an axis between an actuated position and a non-actuated position. The manually operable locking member is translationally mounted to the body for movement between a first position and a second position. The locking member cooperates with the trigger mechanism to provide first, second and third modes of operation. In the first mode, the locking member is in the first position and articulation of the trigger mechanism from the non-actuated position to the actuated position is precluded. In the second mode, the locking member is in an intermediate position between the first and second positions and the trigger mechanism is freely allowed to articulate between the actuated and non-actuated positions.Type: GrantFiled: October 12, 2001Date of Patent: August 26, 2003Assignee: Black & Decker Inc.Inventors: Kevin W. Patent number: 6263979Abstract: A power tool system has detachable and interchangeable implements and driving sources. The interchangeable implements and driving sources use a housing having common mating interface to selectively assemble a power tool having the desired characteristics. A latch is used to hold a selected implement and driving source in functional engagement. An adjustable bale handle provides a comfortable and safe handhold for various configurations of the interchangeable implements.Type: GrantFiled: July 16, 1999Date of Patent: July 24, 2001Assignee: The Black & Decker CorporationInventors: Colin Dyke, Calvin Edleblute, William Lessig, Robert Meloni, John Vantran, Robert P. Patent number: 5379846Abstract: An electrically-powered appliance, such as a line-type grass trimmer, lawn edger, snowthrower, or the like, includes a housing, an elongated hollow tubular handle, an elongated electrical cable extending through and within the tubular handle, and an attachment arrangement for attaching the tubular handle to the housing. The housing includes an attachment portion and a removable portion, preferably of a common "clamshell" configuration, with fasteners extending through openings in these housing portions for fastening them to one another with the tubular handle securely clamped therebetween. Such tubular handle has openings extending laterally therethrough which correspond to the openings through the attachment and removable housing portions. The housing openings and the handle openings are laterally aligned with one another during assembly in order to ensure proper alignment and positioning of the handle when the housing portions are fastened to one another with the handle clamped therebetween.Type: GrantFiled: January 7, 1993Date of Patent: January 10, 1995Assignee: Black & Decker Inc.Inventors: Robert P. Wagster, Vernon R. Lacher, John S. Vantran

Patent number: 5325928Abstract: An electric edger having a transversely mounted electric motor for rotationally driving a vertically oriented cutting blade. The edger is supported by a pair of auxiliary rear wheels and a large on-center front or main wheel that is journalled to a hub that is mounted directly to the exterior of the motor field casing so that the wheel rotates about the motor. The rotational axis of the on-center wheel is substantially aligned with the cutting blade axis and the plane of the wheel is substantially aligned with the center of gravity of the motor subassembly. This configuration, together with the large diameter of the wheel, improves the balance and maneuverability of the edger, particularly around irregularly shaped borders and over uneven terrain, without increasing the overall dimensions of the unit.Type: GrantFiled: January 7, 1993Date of Patent: July 5, 1994Assignee: Black & Decker Inc.Inventors: Robert P. Wagster, Vernon R. Lacher, John S. Vantran

Patent number: 4378107Abstract: A workpiece supporting and clamping assembly is adapted to be mounted on a wall or similar structure and to be adjustable between a substantially vertical storage position, closely adjacent the wall and a working position substantially perpendicular to the wall. The assembly comprises a pair of brackets, a pair of spaced apart, parallel hinge assemblies, each having locking means and a release lever associated therewith, and a workpiece supporting and clamping device, pivotally coupled with the brackets and hinge assemblies. The workpiece supporting and clamping device comprises a generally rigid base frame which includes a pair of parallel, spaced apart frame members and a pair of elongated, coplanar top members which are mounted on the spaced apart members, extending generally transversely thereto such that their upper surfaces define the work supporting surface and their opposed side surfaces, the work clamping surfaces.Type: GrantFiled: September 17, 1981Date of Patent: March 29, 1983Assignee: Black & Decker Inc.Inventors: Robert P. Wagster, Russell Pizzuto
-
Patent number: 4352489Abstract: An improved vise for supporting a workpiece during moderate to light working operations comprises first and second jaw members and a support means formed of a polymer plastic. The support means comprises a support body for the jaw members and a base body. The support body includes a bowl shaped member which is received in a cavity of the base body. A restraining means enables repositioning of the support body at a plurality of different orientations and for restraining the body at a selected orientation.Type: GrantFiled: October 15, 1980Date of Patent: October 5, 1982Assignee: Black & Decker Inc.Inventor: Robert P. Wagster

Patent number: 4265436Abstract: An improved arrangement for mounting an auxiliary workpiece support body to a workpiece support device includes a restraining means for selectively inhibiting and enabling motion of the auxiliary support body in the direction of a longitudinal axis while simultaneously enabling rotation of the body about the axis. The auxiliary support body includes a means for restraining jaw cladding bodies of different thicknesses on a workpiece support device and permitting rotary motion of the support body.Type: GrantFiled: August 10, 1979Date of Patent: May 5, 1981Assignee: Black & Decker Inc.Inventors: Robert P. Wagster, Russell Pizzuto
