  • Patent number: 4971745
Abstract: A method for applying a uniform sealant coating over the portion of a fastener exposed above a panel includes applying a sealant retaining shell over the exposed portion of the fastener to define a closed volume between the shell, fastener and panel. The shell has an aperture, removed from the mouth of the shell, for receiving sealant therethrough. An injection nozzle receiving structure for receiving a sealant injector nozzle therein is provided adjacent and substantially aligned with the aperture. Sealant is injected into the shell through the injection nozzle receiving structure and through the aperture therein to fill the area between the fastener and the shell. A pressure is selected for injecting the sealant such that injection is stopped when the shell is filled. The sealant is allowed to cure and the retaining shell is removed.

  • Patent number: 4761884
Abstract: A metal skin trimming device which cuts an edge of a first metal skin to a net shape that is complementary to the edge of a second metal skin that has been previously attached to a frame, such as the airframe of an aircraft fuselage. A guide carried by the device is adjustable to set the gap that will appear between the edges of the first and second metal skins when they are attached as by riveting to the airframe.

  • Patent number: 4519974
Abstract: A method and apparatus for applying a uniform sealant coating over the portion of a fastener (14) exposed above a panel (10, 12) includes depositing an amount of uncured sealant (S) in a cavity (44) in a sealant retaining shell (40). The shell and sealant is applied over the exposed portion (22) of the fastener (14) and the retaining shell is brought into contact with the panel such that the uncured sealant is entrapped between the shell and the exposed portion of the fastener and the panel. As descent is made onto the fastener, a slight rotating motion may be used to adjust the sealant around the fastener equally. The sealant is allowed to cure and thereafter the shell is removed leaving a uniform sealant coating over the fastener exposed end.
