Patent number: 6758047Abstract: A portable ice storage and dispensing device has a portable container for housing the ice to be dispensed. An opening is formed on the portable insulated container. The opening is used for dispensing the ice out of the portable insulated container. An ice dispenser is located internal to the portable insulated container and extends partially out of the portable insulated container. The ice dispenser is used for moving and directing the ice out of the opening.Type: GrantFiled: April 9, 2003Date of Patent: July 6, 2004Inventor: Robert R. Giles

Patent number: 6203152Abstract: An inkjet printing device comprises a platen on which a printing zone is defined, a carriage, onto which at least a printhead is mounted, slidable along the printing zone near the platen, a service station, located in a service zone separated from the printing zone, a housing protecting and enclosing the printing zone and the servicing zone, and a device, for example a fan, for producing an air flow within the housing. A substantially constant air path is defined within the housing of the device through which the air flow is allowed to pass during its operation. A method for reducing ink aerosol in such a device, during its operation, comprises the following steps: producing an air flow within the housing, and forcing the air flow to pass through a substantially constant air path defined within the housing.Type: GrantFiled: September 16, 1999Date of Patent: March 20, 2001Assignee: Hewlett-Packard CompanyInventors: Miquel Boleda, Robert R Giles, Paul David Gast

Replaceable ink supply module (bag/box/tube/valve) for replenishment of on-carriage inkjet printhead
Patent number: 6076920Abstract: A replaceable ink supply module which provides replenishment of an inkjet printhead includes a collapsible bag, an enclosure box, a connective tube, and an on/off valve. These four components are incorporated into a composite sealed system which remains intact during shipment, storage, installation and operation. The collapsible bag is placed inside of the protective enclosure box and has an end-connect outlet permanently attached to one end of the connective tube. The other end of the connective tube carries a permanently attached on/off valve designed for periodic engagement with an inlet valve of an inkjet printhead.Type: GrantFiled: March 3, 1997Date of Patent: June 20, 2000Assignee: Hewlett-Packard CompanyInventors: Elizabeth Zapata, Mark E Young, Robert R Giles, Felix Ruiz, Rosa Calatayud, Ronald D. Patent number: 5646667Abstract: Two printing-medium guide systems restrain the medium. One is in an area upstream (along the direction of medium advance) from the pen, and extending laterally across the width of the medium except in one or more regions laterally near the engagement of a print-medium advancing device. The other guide system is disposed laterally from the pen, and extends laterally across the medium only in one or more regions laterally near the engagement of the advancing device. Preferably these "one or more regions" are only near the lateral edges of the medium--so that (1) the first guide system restrains the medium over an area that stops short (ideally about 11/2 centimeter short) of the lateral edges; and (2) the second guide system is bifurcated, disposed laterally in two directions from the pen, and restrains the medium across only the lateral edges of the medium (most preferably in a strip whose width is a few millimeters, ideally 3 mm).Type: GrantFiled: April 4, 1995Date of Patent: July 8, 1997Assignee: Hewlett-Packard CompanyInventors: Damon W. Patent number: 5581289Abstract: An ink-jet printer having improved print quality and full color printing capability on plain paper media. To accommodate placement of both input and output media trays on the same side of the printer housing for operator convenience, a paper path with a direction reversal is employed. A paper preconditioning preheater with a curved surface and a multi-purpose paper path component accomplish the direction reversal. The paper path component is a unitary component which employs curved ribs to reduce the contact area with the medium and reduce static charge buildup, and has slots formed therein to release water vapor given off by the medium when preheated. The component permits paper to be loaded manually via a second manual feed path, through a housing, and upon opening a rear access door in the housing, such component is easily removable to facilitate operator access to the paper path and electrical components.Type: GrantFiled: April 30, 1993Date of Patent: December 3, 1996Assignee: Hewlett-Packard CompanyInventors: Gerold G. Patent number: 5461408Abstract: An ink-jet printer having improved print quality and full color printing capability on plain paper media. To accommodate placement of both input and output media trays on the same side of the printer housing for operator convenience, a paper path with a direction reversal is employed. A paper preconditioning preheater with a curved surface and a multi-purpose paper path component accomplish the direction reversal. The printer further includes a manual feed path for guiding a manually fed sheet or envelope from a manual feed inlet slot at the top, rear corner of the printer to a path converging location with the primary feed path. The preheater includes a heating portion disposed along the primary path between the path converging location and the-print area, to provide the capability of preheating media fed either from the input tray or the manual feed slot.Type: GrantFiled: April 30, 1993Date of Patent: October 24, 1995Assignee: Hewlett-Packard CompanyInventors: Robert R. Patent number: 5413427Abstract: A printer architecture structure in which a flexible external case is used to compress and sandwich internal printer structure comprised of a rigid metal base and printer chassis structure by nominally compressing resilient pads between the chassis structure and case top and side walls. Additional resilient pads between the base and chassis structure are ordinarily nominally uncompressed by the flexible case except during application of shock loads during shipment or vibrations during printer operation. The construction minimizes transmission of externally applied shock loads through the internal components of the system and assists in containing vibrations and noise generated during printer operation interiorly of the case. The relatively rigid base comprises a metal enclosure for RF shielding of the electronic components.Type: GrantFiled: November 9, 1993Date of Patent: May 9, 1995Assignee: Hewlett-Packard CompanyInventors: Robert R. Giles, Richard M. Kemplin, Ronald J. Kaplan

Patent number: 5399039Abstract: An ink-jet printer having improved print quality and full color printing capability on plain paper media. To accommodate placement of both input and output media trays on the same side of the printer housing for operator convenience, a paper path with a direction reversal is employed. A low cost radiant print heater with a reflector cavity heats the medium at the print area to increase the ink carrier evaporation rate. The printer provides improved medium control at the print area through an arrangement of small diameter drive and tension shafts and shortened handoff distance between the rollers. The heater is disposed between the drive and tension rollers. To minimize the handoff distance, portions of the drive rollers extend into the reflector cavity. The resulting media advancement mechanism has low inertia, with improved media positioning accuracy.Type: GrantFiled: April 30, 1993Date of Patent: March 21, 1995Assignee: Hewlett-Packard CompanyInventors: Robert R.
