Patent number: 4927227Abstract: An optical fiber cable closure (20) includes a cable termination assembly (22) and a cover (23) into which the termination assembly is inserted. The cable termination assembly includes two spaced end plates (34,36) through which cables (28,29) to be spliced extend. One of the end plates supports a frame (101) which supports a plurality of optical fiber splicing trays (120--120). Adjacent end portions of the trays are staggered and hinged so that some trays may be moved pivotally to expose others. Optical fibers from each incoming cable are routed in individual tubes (115--115) from an optical fiber breakout (110) mounted in the framework to selected ones of the trays. Hinge lock plates (130--130) which complete a hinge for each tray also serve to clamp the tubes incoming to each tray to prevent unintended movement.Type: GrantFiled: October 31, 1988Date of Patent: May 22, 1990Assignee: AT&T Bell LaboratoriesInventors: William H. Bensel, III, Robert H. Gladden, Jr., John F. Malluck, Robert R. Ross, Andrew H. Williamson, Jr.

Patent number: 4820007Abstract: A closure (20) for optical fiber cables each including at least one optical fiber (38) and a metallic shield (47) enclosed in a jacket (48) includes a splice tray (22), a bonding and gripping assembly (26) and mating cover portions (27, 29). The splice tray includes provisions (24) on one side thereof for holding an optical fiber splice such as one which may be made by a rotary splice and a raceway (51) for routing the optical fiber to the splice. Metallic conductors (45--45), if included in the cables, may be spliced on an opposite side of the splice tray. The bonding and gripping assembly is attached to the splice tray and includes opposed projecting portions (78--78) and ferrules (71--71). Each cable to be spliced is routed to the bonding and gripping assembly to cause each projecting portion to be inserted into a cable end between the shield and core thereof to establish an electrical connection with the shield and to cooperate with the associated ferrule to grip the cable end portion.Type: GrantFiled: February 12, 1988Date of Patent: April 11, 1989Assignee: American Telephone and Telegraph Company AT&T Bell LaboratoriesInventors: Robert R. Patent number: 4324106Abstract: An improvement in a recirculating refrigeration system which includes an "economizer" compressor. The economizer compressor is in a flash gas handling sub-system which receives flash gas from the primary system at a substantially higher input pressure than the primary compressor. As a result the load on the primary system compressor is reduced. The overall effect is a more efficient system, using less power.Type: GrantFiled: October 3, 1980Date of Patent: April 13, 1982Assignee: H. A. Phillips & Co.Inventors: Robert R. Ross, Daniel R. Bansch

Patent number: 4310209Abstract: A connecting device for providing electrical continuity of a metallic shield of a jacketed distribution cable across a splice location and for electrically and mechanically connecting at least one service wire that is electrically connected to the cable at the splice location and to a customer's premise includes a first clamp which comprises an inner plate that is inserted under the shield until a stud upstanding therefrom abuts the cable jacket and shield. An outer plate of the first clamp and an arcuately formed bonding plate of a second clamp, said bonding plate having a relatively short length in a direction along the length of the cable, are positioned over the cable jacket until the stud extends through an opening in each after which a nut is turned onto the stud to secure the first clamp to the cable and the bonding plate to the first clamp.Type: GrantFiled: February 25, 1980Date of Patent: January 12, 1982Assignees: Western Electric Company, Inc., Bell Telephone Laboratories, Inc.Inventors: Mills L. Fleming, George L. Fuchs, Robert H. Gladden, Jr., Robert R. Ross

Patent number: 4076450Abstract: Volute pumps are frequently used for abrasive liquids such as in the transportation of aqueous slurrys of finely divided coal and similar materials. Since pumps for such purposes are very large, they are ordinarily made as double volute pumps to minimize radial thrust. When pumps are used for abrasive materials, the wear on the pump occurs primarily at the volute lips. In accordance with the present invention, a volute pump is provided with replaceable lips so that the lips can be replaced as they become worn. Further, the lips can be made of a much more resistant material than the body of the pump.Type: GrantFiled: January 14, 1976Date of Patent: February 28, 1978Assignee: United Centrifugal PumpsInventor: Robert R. Patent number: 4059968Abstract: A recirculating refrigeration system wherein a screw compressor receives vaporized refrigerant from the evaporators at its low pressure inlet and from a flash tank or receiver at an intermediate pressure inlet. Refrigerant which is not vaporized in the evaporators is trapped in a suction line accumulator from which it flows by gravity into a dump tank. The dump tank has a gas pressure connection to the compressor outlet or to the receiver or flash tank and a control valve is effective to introduce gas under pressure to the dump tank and force the liquid accumulated therein back into a receiver when it has risen to a predetermined level in the dump tank.Type: GrantFiled: April 5, 1976Date of Patent: November 29, 1977Assignee: H. A. Phillips & Co.Inventor: Robert R. Ross

Patent number: 3988904Abstract: A refrigeration system incorporating a compressor sub-system which provides a source of higher pressure gaseous refrigerant to force liquid refrigerant into the receiver when condensor pressure is reduced sufficiently below normal to prevent it accomplishing the same purpose. When condensor pressure is insufficient to force liquid refrigerant from a pilot receiver tank to the receiver tank liquid accumulates in the pilot receiver tank to a level where it actuates a control valve, introducing said higher pressure gaseous refrigerant to said pilot tank and forcing liquid out. While condensor pressure is sufficient to the task, as is normally the case, the higher pressure gaseous refrigerant is received directly by the condensor.Type: GrantFiled: December 5, 1974Date of Patent: November 2, 1976Assignee: H. A. Phillips & Co.Inventor: Robert R. Ross
