  • Patent number: 8695378
Abstract: Methods of making glass include the steps of providing a glass melt in a first melting furnace and flowing the glass melt through a connecting tube from the first melting furnace to a second melting furnace. The methods further include the steps of heating the glass melt within a first area of the connecting tube with a first heating device and heating the glass melt within a second area of the connecting tube with a second heating device. Apparatus for making glass are also provided with a first melting furnace, a second melting furnace, and a connecting tube connecting the first and second melting furnaces. Example apparatus include a first heating device configured to heat the glass melt within the first area of the connecting tube and a second heating device configured to heat the glass melt within the second area of the connecting tube.

  • Publication number: 20100126224
Abstract: A method of delivering molten material from a delivering pipe having an outlet end to a receiving vessel having an inlet end is provided. The method includes arranging the delivering pipe and the receiving vessel in such a way that a gap exists between the outlet end of the delivering pipe and the inlet end of the receiving vessel and the molten material can exit the outlet end of the delivering pipe and enter the inlet end of the receiving vessel without spilling over the inlet end of the receiving vessel. Molten material is delivered to the delivering pipe and allowed to flow from the delivering pipe into the receiving vessel.

  • Publication number: 20100080078
Abstract: The present invention is directed toward a method of reducing contamination of a glass melt by volatilized precious metal oxides that may condense on the stirrer shaft of a stirring vessel and fall back into the glass melt, by heating the shaft. In one embodiment, the stirrer shaft includes an interior cavity and a heating element disposed within the cavity. The heating element heats the shaft to a temperature sufficient to prevent volatilized materials from condensing on the surfaces of the shaft.

  • Patent number: 7454925
Abstract: A method of forming a glass melt including heating a glass feed material in a first melting furnace to form a glass melt, flowing the glass melt into a second melting furnace through a refractory metal connecting tube, and further heating the glass melt in the second melting furnace. The refractory metal connecting tube is heated to prevent the molten glass from excessive cooling, and to ensure that the glass melt entering the second melting furnace is equal to or greater than the temperature of the glass melt in the second melting furnace. An apparatus for performing the method is also disclosed.
