The method includes covering molten steel in the ladle with a particulate mixture consisting essentially of calcium aluminate and dolomitic limestone. The mixture is used in amounts of about 5 to 25 pounds per net ton of molten steel. Using the method of this invention, some steels to be cast without vacuum degassing to reduce the hydrogen level.
