  • Patent number: 6802861
Abstract: A surgically implantable prosthetic device includes a first shell having an exterior surface, an interior surface, and enclosing a lumen, wherein the lumen enclosed by the first shell is able to accommodate a first fluid therein. The prosthetic device further includes a second shell having an exterior surface, an interior surface, and enclosing a lumen, wherein the lumen enclosed by the second shell is able to accommodate a second fluid therein. One or more fitted shells arranged adjacent to and in a graduated relation to each other are situated between the exterior surface of the second shell and the interior surface of the first shell. The one or more shells include an innermost fitted shell and an outermost fitted shell, wherein the innermost fitted shell is adjacent to the exterior surface of the second shell and the outermost fitted shell is adjacent to the interior surface of the first shell.

  • Patent number: 6053927
Abstract: A surgical device for removing implanted devices includes a sleeve device with an elongated trough portion arranged to extend through a skin opening and be positioned subjacent to a particular implanted device. A removable knife assembly is inserted through a tubular portion of the sleeve device and is used to incise scar tissue from a proximal end of the implanted device. The implanted device is then manipulated through the opening in the surrounding scar tissue and deposited on the trough portion of the sleeve device whereupon it is removed through the skin opening. The surgical device may also include a removable trochar device slidably engaging the tubular portion of the sleeve device and penetrating flesh to the implanted device.

  • Patent number: 5496370
Abstract: A prosthetic device, such as a mammary, testicular or chin prosthetic device, which includes a sealable envelope. The envelope is adapted to be filled with a fluid filler and is at least partially filled with a baffle forming material which acts as a baffle slowing the displacement of the fluid filler to achieve the desired tactile and aesthetic properties.

  • Patent number: 4671916
Abstract: A method of identifying instruments, preferably surgical instruments, as belonging to a set comprises forming at least one bore in a location of each instrument belonging to the set such that said bore will neither substantially weaken the instrument nor interfere with its primary functions. The bore may be cast as part of or drilled partially or completely through each instrument. At least one colored plug of a preferably autoclavable material is then secured in the bore. The colored plug may have a distinctively-shaped head portion, or may have multiple end locks at intermittent positions, the excess of which can be cut away. Most preferably, the method of the invention comprises the step of securing the plug between a pair of differently colored washers. An instrument bearing indicia of a set comprises a colored plug inserted in a bore formed in said instrument and a means for securing said plug in said bore.

  • Patent number: 4531244
Abstract: A mammary prosthesis comprising an envelope of an inert elastomer for containing an inert fluid material. The envelope is composed of a plurality of firm protuberances distributed substantially equally thereover. These protuberances may be platelike, ridges, tubes, or posts. The protuberances may be in one or more layers and may be covered with an outer envelope of inert elastomer which may be perforated or in the form of a web. The protuberances provide therebetween flow spaces such that when the scar capsule contracts and compresses the protuberances, the mammary prosthesis will have a space for displacement and remain soft. The protuberances further provide greater localized pressure in pounds per square inch against the scar capsule for a given amount of massage exercise done after surgery. Since scar stretches in response to pressure, this reduces the amount of scar contracture of the capsule.

  • Patent number: 4264990
Abstract: This invention relates to a mammary prosthesis and a method of implanting same. The prosthesis comprises a flexible backing and a soft front envelope, for example, of the inflatable or prefilled type. The flexible backing defines, at least one internal passageway or compartment into which rigidifying material may be forced or emplaced. Upon setting of the rigidifying material in the passageways or compartments, the backing loses a substantial part, if not all, of its flexibility. The rigidified backing thereafter prevents the contracture of natural fibrous tissues generated around the front envelope and backing in a way to prevent hardening of the prosthesis and/or palpable prosthesis edges prevalent with prior art devices.

  • Patent number: 4180871
Abstract: Total wrist prosthesis for restructuring a wrist which is diseased or damaged. The prosthesis is provided with four critical offsets to enable the axes of radial-ulnar deviation and flexion-extension motion of the restructured wrist to lie in planes offset from the axes of the third metacarpal and the distal radius, said planes including the axes of radial-ulnar deviation and flexion-extension motion of the normal wrist.
