  • Patent number: 6154917
Abstract: A carpet extractor includes a base assembly (A) with a two part base housing (10). Upper (22) and lower portions (24,528) of the base housing define a socket (100), for receiving a cleaning fluid recovery tank (120,552), and a chamber (50), rearward of the socket, for receiving a suction fan (82,540) and associated motor (80,542). The chamber includes front (78,544) and rear compartments (546,76) for receiving the suction fan and motor, respectively. The lower portion (22,528) of the base housing defines a first pocket or indentation (70,550) for receiving a motor (68,548) for driving a rotating brushroll (60) and a second pocket (532) for receiving a solution supply pump (520) which selectively supplies pressurized cleaning fluid to a spray bar (526) and a remote distributor (614). The pocket and indentation are positioned rearward of the socket, and generally beneath a forward end of the chamber.

  • Patent number: 6145159
Abstract: An upright carpet extractor for solution cleaning of floor and above floor surfaces has a low profile base assembly (A) including a base housing (10) and a recovery tank and nozzle assembly (18) removably mounted on the housing. The recovery tank and nozzle assembly includes a recovery tank (120, 552) for collecting recovered cleaning solution and a nozzle cover (134) which is attached to a forward portion of the recovery tank exterior to define a nozzle flowpath (138) therebetween. Working air and recovered cleaning solution are drawn through the nozzle flowpath and into the recovery tank by a motor and fan assembly (20,534) mounted to the base housing, rearward of the recovery tank. The nozzle flowpath is removed from the base together with the recovery tank when the recovery tank is to be emptied, allowing the nozzle flowpath to be rinsed conveniently to remove trapped dirt.

  • Patent number: 6108861
Abstract: An upright vacuum cleaner includes a housing having a suction motor and a filter chamber. A floor nozzle is connected to the housing. A hose, which communicates with the filter chamber, includes a first end, an intermediate portion and a second end. A wand, which has a first end and a second end, is selectively mounted on the housing. At least a part of the hose intermediate portion extends longitudinally through the wand from the first end to the second end. The hose first end is secured to the wand first end. A connector assembly is secured on the hose second end. When the wand is selectively mounted on the housing, a section of the hose intermediate portion is stowed in the wand. When the wand is spaced from the housing, the section of the hose intermediate portion is pulled out of the wand.

  • Patent number: 5911261
Abstract: An upright vacuum cleaner is provided and includes an upper section with a handle (15) and a lower cleaning nozzle section (14, 14') having a main suction opening (18) formed in the underside (16) thereof. A suction source (M) is provided and an edge cleaning tool (60) having a suction bore (64) formed therethrough is releasably connected to the cleaning nozzle section (14'). A suction hose (20) selectively connects one of the main suction opening (18) of the nozzle (14') and the suction bore (64) of the edge cleaning tool (60) with the suction source (M). First and second laterally spaced casters (30a, 30b) extend from the underside (16) of the nozzle (14, 14') and each caster (30a, 30b) is pivotable respectively about a vertical axis (D,E). First and second laterally spaced fixed wheels (32a, 32b), each rotatable about a single rolling axis (C), are also provided and positioned forward of the first and second casters (30a, 30b).

  • Patent number: 5869947
Abstract: A rechargeable cordless vacuum cleaner system comprises a hand held vacuum cleaner and a separable charger. The cleaner includes a circuit board assembly having first and second sets of contacts disposed for engagement to first and second sets of mating contacts of a battery pack and the charger. Both sets of contacts are spring loaded for resilient engagement to the mating contacts. A pocket portion is formed adjacent the set of contacts to the charger to avoid direct exposure of the contacts to an operator of the cleaner.

  • Patent number: 5561885
Abstract: A portable hand-held vacuum cleaner includes a housing for holding a motor and a suction fan and a switch slidably mounted on the housing for selectively activating the motor. The switch extends out of the housing so as to be manually engageable. A nozzle is mounted on the housing and a release button, pivotally mounted on the housing, selectively releases the nozzle from the housing. The release button includes a first finger which engages an aperture in a wall of the nozzle, a pivot aperture through which extends a pivot pin secured to the housing for enabling the release button to move between a pair of end positions and a biasing element for urging the release button to one of the pair of end positions. A second finger is also provided on the release button. In one of the end positions of the release button, the second finger engages in a recess of the switch to prevent the release button from being pivoted.
