  • Patent number: 6721355
Abstract: A data traffic predictor for a modem, and a method for power management in a modem, are described. The data traffic predictor includes a data traffic monitor, a periodicity detector and a power mode controller. The data traffic monitor monitors incoming data to the modem. If the periodicity detector determines if the data is substantially periodic, which indicates that the data traffic is isochronous, the power mode controller changes the modem power mode to quiescent power mode operating at a minimum data rate to permit the isochronous data traffic to be carried. The apparatus and method of the present invention permit low level control of a modem's power mode, and permit the use of a quiescent power mode running at a reduced data rate, without sacrificing quick recovery time to a full on power mode when required.

  • Patent number: 6693957
Abstract: An adaptive DMT modem determines, as part of a startup sequence, subscriber loop conditions. One or more loop condition adaptation operations are then performed to reduce the complexity of the filters employed in the modem, to reduce the power dissipated in the modem, to optimize performance of the modem or to reduce the likelihood of EMI being radiated into the premises of a subscriber.

  • Patent number: 6137888
Abstract: A problem in hearing aids or other audio/acoustic amplifier circuits is that external sources of EM energy may be coupled into the electronics of the hearing aid so as to contribute to the acoustic output. The invention provides a circuit for removing the effects of EM interference. A separate reference generator is used to detect the external EM energy. This is fed into an interference canceller which may be adaptive, which effectively removes the unwanted component in the hearing aid signal, leaving only a signal representative of the desired acoustic output.

  • Patent number: 6005927
Abstract: An apparatus and method for maintaining records in a telephone directory involves maintaining a personal directory of at least one record associated with at least one party with which a telephone call is conducted. The record has a field for identifying the party and a frequency of use field for storing a number representing the number of times a call is conducted with the party. In response to a call conducted with a party, the personal directory is searched for a record associated with the party and upon finding such a record, the contents of the frequency of use field of the record are incremented and the records of the personal directory are sorted in an order dependent upon the contents of the frequency of use fields.
