  • Publication number: 20090023850
Abstract: Paint systems, in accordance with exemplary embodiments, of the present invention include a foundation base component and a top coat component. The foundation base component is tinted to match the top coat component to provide both the desired amount of hiding of colors or markings on the substrate to which the paint system is applied, and to enhance the brightness and hue of the color of the paint system. Furthermore, in another innovative aspect of the present invention, the foundation base component comprises at least one low molecular weight polymer that undergoes self-crosslinking at ambient conditions during and after paint drying. The low molecular weight polymer penetrates various substrates, including chalky surfaces, to provide improved adhesion. Moreover, because the low molecular weight polymer is self-crosslinking at ambient conditions, the polymer enhances the performance of dried paints, including improving mechanical strength, tannin block properties, and weatherability.

  • Publication number: 20080058473
Abstract: The invention is directed to latex compositions comprising sequentially designed polymer having a first stage, a second stage and a third stage corresponding to a seed, a core and a shell. The latex polymer is suitable for aqueous low volatile organic compounds (“VOC”) paint (less than 50 g/L) with good block resistance, improved open time and increased water softening resistance. To attain good block resistance, the seed and the core contain monomers that form polymers with relatively harder characteristics and higher glass transition temperature (“Tg”) while the shell contains monomers that form polymers with softer characteristics and lower Tg. To gain improved open time, the latex polymer contains suitable level of hydrophilic monomers necessary to hold water. To achieve water softening resistance, hydrophobic monomers are grafted on hydrophilic portions of the shell or the core layers. The invention is also directed to the process of making the latex by a sequential emulsion polymerization.
