Patent number: 11944770Abstract: An expandable introducer sheath with an interlock dilator. The present technology provides an expandable sheath with a step feature inside its distal opening, and a dilator with an interlock that includes a catch surface configured to engage with the step feature and resist further relative movement so that the body of the dilator is prevented from exiting the distal end of the expandable sheath. This interlocking engagement may allow the dilator to be used to extend and maintain tension on the expandable sheath during insertion into a patient, and then to be retracted from the expandable sheath by pulling the dilator in the opposite direction. The present technology also provides a dilator hub with a spring mechanism configured to achieve and maintain a desired tension on the expandable sheath and to prevent overextension of the expandable sheath when the dilator is being inserted into the expandable sheath.Type: GrantFiled: April 6, 2023Date of Patent: April 2, 2024Assignee: Abiomed, Inc.Inventors: Christopher N. Korkuch, Robert Fishman, Michael Thomas Finnegan, Charles DeLorenzo, Andrew Gentile, Anne Gabrielle McLoughlin, Robert Swierczek, Matthew D'Agostino, Jonathan Barry

Publication number: 20240024628Abstract: A positioning device for maintaining positioning of an introducer hub relative to a repositioning sheath or catheter may be provided. The positioning devices may include a first coupler, a second coupler configured to be removably coupled to a portion of a repositioning sheath or catheter that is proximal to the first coupler, and a portion extending between the first coupler and the second coupler, the extension bridge configured to maintain a fixed axial distance between the introducer hub and a proximal end of the repositioning sheath or catheter. A flexible hinge may be incorporated, where a medical device would be configured to pass through the second coupler, the flexible hinge, and the first coupler.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 19, 2023Publication date: January 25, 2024Applicant: ABIOMED, Inc.Inventors: Jonathan Barry, Robert Swierczek, Anne McLoughlin, David Johnston, David Filipiak, Christopher Korkuch, Glen Fantuzzi, Robert Fishman, Brian Miley, William Lewis

Publication number: 20230363761Abstract: A device and method are provided for minimizing and/or preventing limb ischemia, such as when a medical device is inserted into a patient’s vasculature that may occlude the vessel. The device may include a tubular member and one or more radially expandable features, such as balloons and/or hydrostatic skeletons, configured to be expanded at a target site, allowing blood to flow around and/or through the radially expandable features.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 10, 2023Publication date: November 16, 2023Applicant: ABIOMED, Inc.Inventors: Robert Swierczek, Claudia Mourran

Publication number: 20230363932Abstract: A device and method are provided for minimizing and/or preventing limb ischemia, such as when a medical device inserted into a patient's vasculature occludes the vessel. The device may include a tubular member and a first anchor configured to hold a position of the tubular member relative to a vessel. The first anchor is configured to appose an internal wall of the vessel. A second anchor may cooperate with the first anchor to hold the position of the tubular member relative to the vessel.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 10, 2023Publication date: November 16, 2023Applicant: ABIOMED, Inc.Inventors: Christopher Korkuch, Glen Fantuzzi, Charles DeLorenzo, Emilia Jahangir, Matthew D'Agostino, Robert Swierczek, Alex McCall

Publication number: 20230085812Abstract: An introducer sheath for the insertion of a medical device into a blood vessel having an expandable sheath. The sheath has a length, a thickness, and proximal and distal ends. The expandable sheath has a frame extending longitudinally between the proximal and the distal ends, and having an exterior surface and an interior surface that forms an interior lumen along the length of the frame. The frame is configured to achieve an expanded state and a contracted state, the expanded state forming an expanded cross-section in the lumen for passing a medical device therethrough. The frame has a smooth coating about the exterior surface and protrusions extending into the lumen along the interior surface. The introducer sheath can be introduced into a patient in the contracted state, with the distal end of the introducer sheath prevented from moving in the proximal direction by an abutment against a dilator end surface.Type: ApplicationFiled: September 28, 2022Publication date: March 23, 2023Applicant: ABIOMED, Inc.Inventors: Christopher Nason Korkuch, Glen R. Fantuzzi, Alexander Ship, Robert Swierczek, Robert Fishman

Publication number: 20210236783Abstract: An expandable introducer sheath with an interlock dilator. The present technology provides an expandable sheath with a step feature inside its distal opening, and a dilator with an interlock that includes a catch surface that is configured to engage with the step feature of the expandable sheath. When the step feature engages the catch surface, it resists further relative movement so that the body of the dilator is prevented from exiting the distal end of the expandable sheath. The nature of the interlocking engagement between the step feature and the catch surface allows the dilator to be used to extend and maintain tension on the expandable sheath during insertion into a patient, and then to be retracted from the expandable sheath by simply pulling the dilator in the opposite direction.Type: ApplicationFiled: February 2, 2021Publication date: August 5, 2021Applicant: ABIOMED, Inc.Inventors: Christopher N.
