Patent number: 8321350Abstract: We provide techniques for uniquely linking security elements in identification documents. In one implementation we provide a digital watermark embedded on, and a smartcard chip embedded in, an identification document. The smart card chip includes a hash or a reduced-bit representation of the digital watermark, while the digital watermark includes a hash of information stored on the smartcard chip. In another implementation we cross-correlate encryption keys carried by various machine-readable features on an identification document. In still another implementation, we embed biometric information, which is stored in smartcard electronic circuitry, with a digital watermark. In one case the watermark is reversible, so that it can be removed to yield unmarked biometric information. In another case the watermark is fragile, to reveal whether the biometric information has been subjected to a transformation. In yet another implementation, we provide a jurisdictional indicator on an identification document.Type: GrantFiled: May 28, 2009Date of Patent: November 27, 2012Assignee: Digimarc CorporationInventor: Robert T. Patent number: 8059858Abstract: The present disclosure relates generally to identification documents and related methods and apparatus. One claim recites a method to determine whether to authenticate an identification document through digital watermarking or through an alternative process. The method includes: receiving data carried by the identification document corresponding to a detection trigger; if the received data indicates an expected presence of digital watermarks, attempting to authenticate the identification document by analyzing digital watermarking carried by the identification document; and if the received data indicates an expected absence of digital watermarks, attempting to authenticate the identification document through an alternative process. Other claims and combinations are provided too.Type: GrantFiled: September 25, 2006Date of Patent: November 15, 2011Assignee: Digimarc CorporationInventors: Trent J. Publication number: 20110225053Abstract: Advertising with machine-readable (mobile) codes by printing a machine-readable code on a print publication, which is then scanned with a device, and the URL of an ad management computer and an ad identification number are decoded from the mobile code. This URL is used to send the ad identification number to the ad management computer, which accesses a database to determine if a link limit for that ad identification number has been exceeded. If not exceeded, then a destination URL of an advertisement web page associated with the ad identification number in the database is sent to the device so it can connect to that URL. If the link limit has been exceeded, then the destination URL from the database is not sent, but is used as an argument to generate search web page, and the ad content management computer transmits the generated search web page to the device.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 9, 2011Publication date: September 15, 2011Inventor: Robert T. Publication number: 20040181671Abstract: The present invention provides methods and systems for authenticating identification documents. We also teach an identification document including two or more digital watermarks. The watermarks correspond with each other or with indicia carried by the identification document. The correspondence can be verified to determine authenticity. We also provide digital watermark detection methods and systems to identify the different watermarks through embedded orientation components. We then focus watermark message-decoding efforts on areas identified as likely including watermark orientation components. In one implementation we provide a watermark detection trigger to identify so-called legacy documents. The trigger may indicate the presence or expected absence of a digital watermark. In other implementations we provide a versatile document authenticator to toggle between watermarking and non-watermarking authentication processes depending on a detection trigger.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 14, 2003Publication date: September 16, 2004Inventors: Trent J. Patent number: 6542933Abstract: The present invention operates by inputting into the client computer a linkage code (a machine readable code such as a bar code symbol or a human-readable alphanumeric text string) that includes a server identification code and an item identification code. The client computer then extracts the server identification code, and obtains from local cache or from the routing server a URL template associated with the server identification code. The URL template includes the name of an information server and at least one parameter field to be completed by the client computer. The URL template is completed by the client computer by filling in at least the item identification code, and the completed URL template is then sent to the information server named therein as a primary content URL request.Type: GrantFiled: April 5, 2000Date of Patent: April 1, 2003Assignee: Neomedia Technologies, Inc.Inventors: Robert T. Patent number: 6434561Abstract: A method of accessing electronic resources via machine readable data embedded on a document which comprises compressing input data with a transmitter adapted to save a first bandwidth using a compression method adapted to minimize utilization of bandwidth by the compressed input data while retaining substantially all information content of the input data and appending a compression flag to the compressed input data indicative of the compression method enabling a receiver to decompress the compressed input data. The compression step further comprises utilizing a compression dictionary adapted to map the elements and strings of the input data to minimized representations having redundancies deleted. The compression dictionary may be appended to the compressed input data (as cleartext or cyphertext) under circumstances where a bandwidth occupied by the appended compression dictionary is less than the bandwidth saved by the step of compressing the input data.Type: GrantFiled: May 9, 1998Date of Patent: August 13, 2002Assignee: Neomedia Technologies, Inc.Inventors: Robert T.
