  • Patent number: 6783482
Abstract: A microprocessor based exercise treadmill control system is disclosed which includes various features to enhance user operation. These features include programs operative to: permit a set of user controls to cause the treadmill to initially operate at predetermined speeds; permit the user to design custom workouts; permit the user to switch between workout programs while the treadmill is in operation; and perform an automatic cooldown program where the duration of the cooldown is a function of the duration of the workout or the user's heart rate. The features also include a stop program responsive to a detector for automatically stopping the treadmill when a user is no longer on the treadmill and a frame tag module attached to the treadmill frame having a non-volatile memory for storing treadmill configuration, and operational and maintenance data. Another included feature is the ability to display the amount of time a user spends in a heart rate zone.

  • Patent number: 6785838
Abstract: A system and method are provided for recovering from the failure of a mirrored boot device (e.g., disk drive). One method is implemented for a computer system that mirrors two (or more) boot devices. If one of the devices fails, a set of compensating activities is performed, which may include removing the failed device from the list of devices from which the system may boot, deleting mirror state data from the device and removing the failed device from the mirroring scheme. After the failed device is repaired or replaced, a set of reintegrating activities is performed, which may include including the device in the mirroring scheme, restoring mirror state data to the device and adding the device to the list of boot devices. Even if the system includes only two mirrored boot devices and one of them fails, it can continue operation and can reboot successfully without using stale data.

  • Patent number: 6785351
Abstract: A method is provided for determining the Doppler frequency shift that occurs in the reception of a communication signal when the relative velocity between the transmitted and receiver is unknown. By estimating the channel characteristics and measuring the channel response to known transmitted data bits, a measure of the Doppler frequency is determined according to the method of the invention. In particular, a good estimate of the Doppler frequency shift is obtained based on a second order statistic of the fading process for the channel response to the known transmitted data bits. The approach is simple and general. It applies for any system such as WCDMA and CDMA 2000 when Doppler frequency is needed.

  • Patent number: 6783167
Abstract: A safety sensing and/or release system for opening a closed compartment of a vehicle comprises a sensing element for sensing the presence of an occupant within the closed compartment of the vehicle, a control responsive to the sensing element, and a release system. The control is operable to provide an output signal in response to a detection of an occupant by the sensing element. The control may be selectably locked to limit providing an unintentional output signal. The release system is operable to open the closed compartment in response to the output signal of the control. The control may be selectably locked in response to an input signal indicative of at least one of the vehicle ignition being on and the vehicle moving, in order to prevent the compartment from unexpectedly opening while the vehicle is moving.

Abstract: A nozzle and electrode combination for use with an electrosurgical device is described. The nozzle includes a shroud defining a channel and a lumen which intersect to define an acute angle. An electrode is positioned within the channel and includes a distal end extending from a distal portion of the shroud and a proximal end extending from the proximal portion of the shroud. An end cap positioned adjacent the proximal portion of the shroud about the electrode is preferably overmolded to the shroud and the electrode. Preferably, a portion of the walls defining the channel and/or the lumen include conductive material which communicates with the electrode to eliminate electric potential within the shroud.

  • Publication number: 20040165888
Abstract: A way of testing a wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) system without requiring connection to data source/sink equipment. A test signal is introduced onto a light path of interest in the system, and the test signal is monitored downstream for signal integrity. Lack of signal integrity is used to identify a fault in the lightpath. Alternatively, optical loopbacks may be used to localize and identify a fault in the lightpath. The lightpath includes a source optical node connected to a sink optical node via intermediate optical nodes. An optical signal introduced at the source node with a destination at the sink node may be looped back at any one of the intermediate nodes or the sink node to localize and identify a fault in the lightpath.

  • Publication number: 20040168106
Abstract: The present invention provides for a test system having a test executive software system for performing tests on units under test. The test executive software system includes a test kernel component that provides control through a generic interface to the test executive software. Test components, instrument components, support objects and a test system interface component are communicatively coupled to the test kernel component. The instrument components can be written as a dynamically linked library (DLL) file so that the instrument component can be broken into basic functional modules associated with the particular instrument type. Each instrument component supports operation in both live mode and virtual mode, so that testing can be performed in both normal mode and simulation mode. Virtual mode allows instruments to be inserted and removed without impacting test applications that do not utilize them, thereby reducing tester downtime.

  • Publication number: 20040164721
Abstract: An external power adapter prevents damage to contacts of power connectors by reducing current in-rush when the powered-up external power adapter is coupled to an information handling system. A control signal from the information handling system is used to initiate a voltage output of the external power adapter such that substantially no voltage is present on the contacts of the power connectors until the control signal is detected by the external power adapter. The external power adapter may determine the presence of an electrical load before applying the output voltage to the information handling system. The output voltage may be ramped from substantially no voltage to operating voltage over a period of time.

  • Publication number: 20040166246
Abstract: A process for reducing the rate of deterioration of wood that includes contacting the wood with an aqueous alkanline colloidal silicon-containing slat composition that is supersaturated with a boron-containing salt. The contacting may be at ambient or elevated temperature and pressure. The composition is an aqueous colloidal silicon-containing salt that is supersaturated with a boron-containing salt and optionally includes an aluminum salt and a preservative. The composition is made by mixing the boron-containing salt with a colloidal, aqueous mixture of a silicon-containing salt and optionally adding the aluminum salt and the preservative. The process is performed under conditions that result in a supersaturated solution of the boron-containing salt. Wood treated with the composition appears to be resistant to insects, rot, UV deterioration, fire, and other environmental insults. The wood also appears to have increased strength.
