    Abstract: An item identification and verification system embeds a secondary machine-detectable symbology within a primary machine-detectable symbology. The primary machine-detectable symbology includes a first decodable multi-dimensional structure and is permanently formed on an item of manufacture. A secondary machine-detectable symbology forms at least a discrete portion of the primary machine-detectable symbology. The secondary machine-detectable symbology may have a second decodable structure that is different from the first decodable multi-dimensional structure of the primary machine-detectable symbology.
