    Abstract: The present embodiments provide methods and apparatuses for use in controlling and directing magnetically levitated vehicles. In some embodiments, a method propels or passes a vehicle along a guideway, magnetically levitates the vehicle as it travels along the guideway, and induces a magnetic drag on the vehicle as it travels along a portion of the guideway. The magnetic drag can be induced by passing the magnet proximate a plate of conductive material. The plate can be positioned on a first side of the vehicle to induce the magnetic drag resulting in a force on the vehicle in a direction toward the first side. The method can further induce the magnetic drag to guide the vehicle along a curve of the guideway, where the plate is positioned on an inward side of the curve such that the force directs the vehicle into the curve.

    Abstract: A method and apparatus for correcting harmonics (multipoles) in high energy particle accelerators using superconducting magnets using a pattern of superconducting bands adjacent to the accelerator magnets. In such accelerators, superconducting coils are positioned around a non-magnetic beam tube with the magnetic coils designed to guide particles, such as protons, along the tube. Magnetic field non-uniformities in the form of multipole harmonics will disrupt the beam guidance, causing particles to hit the tube walls and be lost, reducing accelerator efficiency. The negative effects of multipoles (harmonics) in such accelerators can be reduced or eliminated by positioning a non-magnetic tube bearing a pattern of longitudinal superconducting bands, connected by circumferential band segments around the exterior of the helium vessel or other suitable surface near the magnet ends. The bands are formed from a superconductor having a critical temperature above the boiling temperature of liquid nitrogen.

    Abstract: Method for fabricating a laminated coil conductor for a high current coil which includes wrapping a layer of insulation around a rotatable shaped mandrel and then winding a plurality of copper sheets over the insulation as the mandrel is rotated. Solder is interposed between the copper sheets and between coolant tubes positioned on each end of each coil conductor. The assemblage is then removed from the mandrel and raised to a temperature to bond the copper sheets and coolant tubes together. The assemblage is then placed in a structural box and a plastic is injected into the box to fill any voids between the coil conductor and the box.An assembly of a plurality of coil conductors arranged in a high current coil according to the method is illustrated.
