  • Patent number: 6066683
Abstract: Copolymer DMC-catalyzed polyoxypropylene polyols which exhibit processing latitude similar to base-catalyzed copolymer analogs and base-catalyzed homopolyoxypropylene analogs may be prepared by oxyalkylation with a mixture of propylene oxide and ethylene oxide such that a finite ethylene oxide content is maintained in the oxyalkylation reactor for the most substantial part of the oxyalkylation, the polyoxypropylene polyol having randomly distributed oxyethylene moieties which constitute 1.5 weight percent or more of the polyol product.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: April 3, 1998
Date of Patent: May 23, 2000
    Assignee: Lyondell Chemical Worldwide, Inc.
Inventors: Robert W. Beisner, Chiu Yan Chan, Thomas P. Farrell, Danny J. Frich, Mark R. Kinkelaar, Jack R. Reese, II, Donald F. Rohr, Wolfgang Schmidt, Andrew M. Thompson
  • Patent number: 6008263
Abstract: Copolymer DMC-catalyzed polyoxypropylene polyols which exhibit processing latitude similar to base-catalyzed copolymer analogs and homopolyoxypropylene analogs may be prepared by oxyalkylation with a mixture of propylene oxide and ethylene oxide such that a finite ethylene oxide content is maintained in the oxyalkylation reactor for the most substantial part of the oxyalkylation, the polyoxypropylene polyol having randomly distributed oxyethylene moieties which constitute 1.5 weight percent or more of the polyol product. Block copolymer polyols having external blocks containing lesser oxyethylene content than internal blocks and bicompositional compositions containing discrete multimodal and dissimilar and optionally multimodal polyols produced by a continuous addition of starter process are useful as polyols exhibiting greater processing latitude.

  • Patent number: 4225530
Abstract: This invention relates to the continuous production of alkane polyols by the reaction of hydrogen and CO in a homogeneous liquid phase mixture containing a rhodium carbonyl complex catalyst, the mole ratio of H.sub.2 /CO in the reactant gas being above about 0.1, wherein the improvement comprises periodically lowering the H.sub.2 /CO mole ratio in the reactant gas to about 0.1 or less and thereafter increasing the H.sub.2 /CO mole ratio to about its former value.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: December 11, 1978
Date of Patent: September 30, 1980
    Assignee: Union Carbide Corporation
Inventors: Robert W. Beisner, Stephen C. Winans
  • Patent number: 4224235
Abstract: This invention relates to the continuous production of alkane polyols by the reaction of hydrogen and oxides of carbon in a homogeneous liquid phase mixture containing a rhodium carbonyl complex catalyst wherein the improvement comprises periodically lowering the temperature of the liquid phase mixture and thereafter raising it to about its former value.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: December 11, 1978

    Assignee: Union Carbide Corporation
Inventors: Robert W. Beisner, Stephen C. Winans
  • Patent number: 4191701
Abstract: The process involves the separation of product from a liquid homogeneous mixture obtained from the reaction of oxides of carbon (e.g. CO) and H.sub.2 in a solvent solution containing a rhodium carbonyl complex catalyst. The solution stability of the catalyst is enhanced by volatilizing the product from the mixture while simultaneously maintaining the mixture in contact with CO gas.
