  • Publication number: 20120118437
Abstract: The present invention is of zinc or zinc alloy coated steel for hot forming having an inorganic overlay covering the zinc or zinc alloy coating to prevent loss of zinc during heating and hot forming. In one embodiment, the inorganic overlay has a coefficient of thermal expansion greater than the coefficient of thermal expansion of zinc oxide. In another embodiment, the inorganic overlay has a compositional gradient interface with the zinc or zinc alloy coating. Preferably the inorganic overlay may be comprised of material selected from phosphates, oxides, nitrates, carbonates, silicate, chromate, molybdate, tungstate, vanadate, titanate, borate, fluoride and mixtures thereof. A method of preparing the steel for hot forming and a method for hot forming the steel are provided.

  • Patent number: 6969475
Abstract: A photoluminescent phosphorescent material for emergency lighting and the like. An alkaline earth aluminate base material is alloyed with a lanthamide earth element and a transition metal element. When exposed to ambient lighting, the material of the present invention emits light in dark areas even after the loss of electrical power. The addition of a transition metal element such as Scandium (Sc) provides longer and brighter photoluminescence than is expected by the use of a lanthanide element alone.

  • Patent number: 5624632
Abstract: An aluminum alloy product for use as a damage tolerant product for aerospace applications, including fuselage skin stock. The aluminum alloy composition contains about 3-7 wt % magnesium, about 0.03-0.2 wt % zirconium, about 0.2-1.2 wt % manganese, up to 0.15 wt % silicon and about 0.05-0.5 wt % of a dispersoid-forming element selected from the group consisting of: scandium, erbium, yttrium, gadolinium, holmium and hafnium, the balance being aluminum and incidental elements and impurities.

  • Patent number: 5601934
Abstract: There is disclosed an improved memory disk stock comprised of an alloy composition which includes: about 1-11 wt. % magnesium, preferably between about 2-7 wt. % Mg; up to about 0.3 wt. % zirconium preferably about 0.02-0.25 wt. % Zr; up to about 0.2 wt. % iron, up to about 0.2 wt. % silicon, and about 0.02-0.2 wt. % of a dispersoid-forming element selected from scandium, erbium, thulium, lutetium, ytterbium, hafnium and yttrium, the balance aluminum and incidental elements and impurities. With preferably about 0.05-0.15 wt. % of scandium added to such compositions, these disk stocks exhibit significant room temperature yield strength increases over the same compositions without any scandium added.
