Patent number: 9180010Abstract: Aspects of the present disclosure relate generally to preparing models of three-dimensional structures. In particular, a model of a three-dimensional structure constructed of porous geometries is prepared. A component file including a porous CAD volume having a boundary is prepared. A space including the porous CAD volume is populated with unit cells. The unit cells are populated with porous geometries having a plurality of struts having nodes on each end. The space is populated with at least one elongated fixation element extending beyond the boundary to produce an interlocking feature enabling assembly or engagement with a mating structure.Type: GrantFiled: September 14, 2012Date of Patent: November 10, 2015Assignees: Howmedica Osteonics Corp., The University Of LiverpoolInventors: Nicholas Nai Guang Dong, Matthew P. Publication number: 20120253474Abstract: One embodiment of the implant comprises a porous metal bone ingrowth portion (14) having a first side connected to a high density or solid (fully dense) metal portion (16) which in turn has an opposite side connected to a porous metal soft tissue ingrowth portion (12) thus forming a sandwich structure with the high density or fully dense portion in the middle. The implant may be made of a resorbable material such as an alloy of magnesium. Alternately, the alloy can be selected from the group consisting of calcium, iron, yttrium and lithium. The porous metal soft tissue ingrowth portion (12) has porosity characteristics allowing cartilage to interdigitate with the pores and extend outwardly beyond the platform of the metal surface towards a joint capsule. The solid or fully dense intermediate layer 16 may have some porosity, however that porosity prevents either bone tissue or cartilage tissue from migrating therethrough.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 20, 2010Publication date: October 4, 2012Applicant: HOWMEDICA OSTEONICS CORP.Inventors: Robert W. Klein, Aaron Essner, Anthony P. Napolitano

Patent number: 7842095Abstract: A temporary femoral implant system has a porous mold and a femoral component. The system fits at least partially in a femoral cavity. The mold has a wall with an interior surface and an exterior surface forming an interior space for receiving an antibiotic bone cement. The mold allows the antibiotic to diffuse through the wall to the exterior surface. The femoral component has a stem portion received within the mold. A method of using the implant system includes providing an implant system comprising a mold and a femoral component, inserting the mold into the femoral cavity with the exterior surface facing the femoral cavity, inserting the stem portion of a femoral component into the interior space of the mold and filling the interior space of the mold with an antibiotic bone cement.Type: GrantFiled: September 11, 2007Date of Patent: November 30, 2010Assignee: Howmedica Osteonics Corp.Inventor: Robert W. Klein

Publication number: 20100297462Abstract: In one embodiment, the present invention may be a method of forming a porous and/or dense article from metal powder (12), including adding to a mold a first feedstock comprising an agglomerated metal powder (12) and an agglomeration agent, forming said first feedstock into a green state dense article (22); and removing said agglomeration agent. Furthermore, the present invention may include a second feedstock including an agglomerated metal powder (12), a space filling material and an agglomeration agent which may be formed into a green state porous article (21). The present invention also includes a dense and/or porous article (22 and 21) manufactured by various methods, as well as methods for creating the dense and porous feedstocks. Moreover, the present invention may include an article which may be a medical implant.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 13, 2007Publication date: November 25, 2010Applicant: HOWMEDICA OSTEONICS CORP.Inventors: John Lapszynski, Robert W. Patent number: 4697768Abstract: Strake, flap and canard control surfaces of an aircraft are driven by an error signal which is comprised of a pilot stick command signal and feedback components including measured vertical acceleration and pitch rate of the aircraft and a third feedback component derived from a complementary filter. The filter has a high-pass filter section which operates upon canard position data and a low-pass filter section which operates upon pitch rate. A summation of the signals passing both filtering sections is summed with the vertical acceleration and pitch rate feedback signals to form a combined feedback signal.Type: GrantFiled: November 12, 1985Date of Patent: October 6, 1987Assignee: Grumman Aerospace CorporationInventor: Robert W.
