Patent number: 5554699Abstract: Branched and cyclic N,N-dialkyldithiocarbamyl accelerators for the sulfur vulcanization of rubber have been found to generally perform as well as the corresponding straight chain N,N-dialkyldithiocarbamyl accelerators, but surprisingly do not produce detectable amounts of environmentally undesirable N-nitrosamines.The branched N,N-alkyldithiocarbamyl accelerators are generally represented by the formula: ##STR1## where R is a branched alkyl group, R' is an alkyl group which may or may not be branched or a cyclic alkyl group or an alkaryl or aryl group, X is another thiocarbamyl group of the same general structure, a primary alkylamino group, an alkylthio group, a 2-benzothiazyl group, or a metal ion, and n is an integer of from 1 to 6.Type: GrantFiled: June 28, 1994Date of Patent: September 10, 1996Assignee: The B. F. Goodrich CompanyInventors: Robert W. Layer, Dwight W. Chasar

Patent number: 4791173Abstract: A synthetic rubber (SR) tire tread of styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) and butyl rubber which SR is essentially free of natural rubber (NR), upon vulcanization with sulfur in the presence of a combination of sulfenamide accelerators, provides excellent oxidative stability, resistance to hardening, and flex resistance, despite increasing the level of sulfur to an amount in the range from 2.0-3.0 phr, as long as the total amount of sulfenamide accelerators is less than 2.0 phr and there is more TCS than BTS. The crosslink network generated by the use of TCS in combination with BTS, which combination produces poor oxidation stability in a predominantly NR containing rubber, is not produced in SR.Type: GrantFiled: July 17, 1987Date of Patent: December 13, 1988Assignee: The B F Goodrich CompanyInventor: Robert W. Patent number: 4629752Abstract: A particular branched chain polyalkylenepolyamine ("PAPA") having plural amine groups including a secondary amine group intermediate terminal free primary amine groups (that is, neither one is hindered), and having at least two C atoms between each group, may be selectively cyclized with a ketoform reaction to form a polysubstituted piperazinone ("PSP"), with specific directivity. Such PSPs are linked to a triazine nucleus to yield piperazinone-triazine ("PIP-T") compounds which are excellent stabilizers for polyolefins and other light-degradable polymers. Certain acyclic polyalkylenepolyamines may have a PIP-T substituent at each N atom forming pendant PIP-Ts ("P[PIP-T]" for brevity) which are also excellent stabilizers, and like some of the PIP-Ts, some P[PIP-T]s provide photostabilization without noticeably interfering with the color of films and fibers provided by even pastel-colored pigments and dyes.Type: GrantFiled: July 22, 1985Date of Patent: December 16, 1986Assignee: The B. F. Goodrich CompanyInventors: Robert W. Layer, John T. Lai, Pyong N. Son

Patent number: 4484010Abstract: Hindered hydroxybenzylcyclopentadienes and derivatives thereof, useful as antioxidants, are prepared by reacting cyclopentadiene, an alkali metal, and a hindered p-methylphenol having a displaceable group attached to the methyl group in the presence of a non-protic solvent; or in one step, by reacting cyclopentadiene, hindered phenol that is devoid of a group in the para position, formaldehyde, an amine, water, and an alkali metal hydroxide in the presence of a phase transfer catalyst; or in one step, by reacting cyclopentadiene and a hindered substituted p-methyl-phenol containing a displaceable group, in the presence of a non-protic solvent, water, an alkali metal hydroxide and a phase transfer catalyst. These compounds readily dimerize whereas the bis compounds are prepared in presence of an excess amount of the substituted p-methylphenol.Type: GrantFiled: January 10, 1983Date of Patent: November 20, 1984Assignee: The B. F. Goodrich CompanyInventor: Robert W. Layer

Patent number: 4133799Abstract: Benzofuranylphenols are produced by (1) reacting glyoxal with a phenol in the presence of an acidic catalyst to form an acetal, and (2) thereafter partially hydrolyzing the acetal with an acidic or basic catalyst. Some benzofuranylphenols are effective stabilizers of organic materials against the deleterious effects of oxygen, heat and light. The stability of dienic polymers and styrene-acrylonitrile copolymers is particularly enhanced by incorporating stabilizing amounts of some benzofuranylphenols.Type: GrantFiled: April 29, 1977Date of Patent: January 9, 1979Assignee: The B. F. Goodrich CompanyInventor: Robert W. Layer
