  • Publication number: 20040104338
Abstract: Techniques for calibrating a laser scanner using a beam and camera which are swept in synchronization across a target object. A special calibration machine is disclosed. This machine mounts a completed scanner assembly and moves a target to collect camera output data from the scanner. The machine includes position sensing means which accurately determine the position of the target. The target position is then correlated to the camera output data for a variety of points. Curve-fitting techniques are then employed to create a mathematical function which converts the a given camera output datum to a distance from the scanner. The calibration machine is also used to create a table of correction factors which are used for different scanner mirror positions. The curve-fitting mathematical function, along with the table of error corrections, are then embedded in the software which converts the raw camera output data to computed points in three-dimensional space.

  • Patent number: 6463402
Abstract: A method for creating a full surface model of a log using optical scanners mounted on an existing infeed assembly. The method recognizes that a log is only stable for a portion of its travel along the infeed assembly, meaning that only portions of the log may be accurately scanned for both cross-sectional and positional data. The balance of the log can only be scanned for cross-sectional data. The method uses the regions of the log for which both cross-sectional and positional data are known to create a theoretical centerline for the entire log. The cross-sections for the regions without positional data are then placed along the theoretical centerline and all the cross sections are blended together to create a full surface model. The full surface model is then used to determine the optimum configuration of dimensioned lumber which may be sawn from the log.

  • Patent number: 5146974
Abstract: A pouring system uses low pressure air to force molten lead into mold cavities. The pour spout is heated by the lead bath, and, preferably, a small gap is maintained between the pouring spout and a weir on the mold cavity to prevent stringers from being attached to the cast piece. At the completion of the lead pouring operation, excess metal is drained back through the spout and into the lead bath. Lead volume is controlled by adjusting pressure and timer settings, and a fill hole allows the pump to refill.

  • Patent number: 4845682
Abstract: The invention provides an apparatus and method to confirm or deny the presence of an object within the scan area of an ultrasonic sensing system by requiring that any object be identified on at least two consecutive scans of the sensing system and using scan energy patterns which occur at irregular repetition times to selectively reject spurious direct or reflected signals present in the area. A generator of predetermined pattern burst of ultrasonic energy is arranged to produce one such burst of ultrasonic energy and a timing signal is coupled thereto so as to apply timing signals to cause production of the bursts. The timing signal source produces timing signals only according to a varying pattern whereby separation between adjacent signals meet certain present parameters. The energy patterns are applied to a transmitter which applies them to a scan area whereby the echo or returned energy from an object in the scan area is received and stored.

  • Patent number: 4682153
Abstract: A fail-safe sensor system to provide a positive indication of the proper operation of a sensor system by accounting for the return signals from an active zone and a monitor zone beyond. Search signals, provided by a transducer operating in the transmit mode, are transmitted within an active zone within which objects to be detected are expected to be located. Unreturned search signals are permitted to travel beyond the active zone into a monitor zone beyond and objects in such monitor zone cause return signals which are also employed. A counter feed from a free running clock source is permitted to run up a count whose predetermined limit represents the estimated maximum time period during which a sensor system should operate without contacting an object. Return signals, whether from objects in the active zone or the monitor zone, reset the counter back to zero.

  • Patent number: 4203385
Abstract: Disclosed herein is a fluid pressure indicator for providing visual indication whether or not the magnitude of a fluid pressure condition is above a predetermined minimum value. The indicator comprises indicating means having an indicating portion and a diaphragm. The indicating means is movable between a first extreme position in which the indicating portion is not visible and a second extreme position in which the indicating portion is visible. The diaphragm has a fixed portion and a resiliently deformable portion which is affixed to the indicating means and movable responsive to changes in the magnitude of the fluid pressure condition.

  • Patent number: 4054743
Abstract: An electrical cable accessory includes a generally tubular member of elastomeric material which is to be installed by placement over a cylindrical surface to grip the cylindrical surface, when in appropriate assembled relation therewith, with a predetermined gripping force established by dilation of the tubular member, the installation being facilitated by introducing fluid under pressure, through means provided in the tubular member, between the tubular member and the cylindrical surface, and simultaneously impeding the escape of the fluid under pressure from between the tubular member and the cylindrical surface by means adjacent one of the ends of the tubular member to cause dilation of the tubular member and establish a fluid layer between the tubular member and the cylindrical surface, thereby reducing the gripping force during installation.
